Grinding When Shifting Into 2nd Gear

(Supersedes 00-055, dated September 19, 2000)

PROBLEM

The transmission intermittently grinds when shifting

into 2nd gear at high engine rpm.

CORRECTIVE ACTION

Replace the countershaft 1st gear and the countershaft

2nd gear set.

Countershaft 1st Gear:

P/N 23421-PCY-000, H/C 6234272

Countershaft 2nd Gear Set:

P/N 23432-PCY-306, H/C 6234298

(Kit includes 2nd gear, synchros, synchro hub, and

synchro sleeve.)

Locknut (29 mm):

P/N 90202-PCY-000, H/C 6245286

Honda Manual Transmission Fluid

(1.6 quarts):

Out of warranty: Any repair performed after warranty

expiration may be eligible for goodwill consideration by

the District Service Manager or your Zone Office. You

must request consideration, and get a decision, before

starting work.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Remove the transmission (see pages 13-5 through

13-11 of the 2000 S2000 Service Manual).

2. Disassemble the transmission, and remove the

countershaft and the mainshaft (see pages 13-12

through 13-26).

3. Replace the countershaft 1st gear and the counter-

shaft 2nd gear set (see pages 13-38 through 13-44).

4. Reassemble the transmission (see pages 13-55

through 13-65). Make sure you install the select

return spring and the 8 x 40 mm pin as shown.

5. Reinstall the transmission (see pages 13-66

through 13-72).

6. Fill the transmission with 1.6 quar ts of Honda MTF.

7. Test-drive the vehicle to make sure the transmission

shifts smoothly into 2nd gear with no grinding. Do

not

exceed 4,000 rpm for the first 12 shifts into 2nd

gear.
