Default Naturally Aspirated S2000 - 1:30 lap at WSIR (video)

I planned to go to Buttonwillow Saturday for testing before the 2013 season, but with rain in the forecast, I made a last minute decision to go to Big Willow for the open test day on 12/22/12 (that wasn't on the calendar). I arrived at the track around noon; it was cold and windy, I was sick, now I feel even worse today, but the results were absolutely worth it. I had the whole track to myself, not a single other driver at the big track that day. Temp was low to high 50s when I was there with 5-12 mph winds.

My last trip to Big Willow resulted in a 1:34.7 on 7 day old 225/255 RS3s, and I was pretty happy with the time. After adding 255 square NT01s (one day old), 2.5" wing risers, a front sway bar, and removing the oem soft top, I figured a high 1:32 was a reasonable target if it was windy. The first session brought a 1:33. A 32 followed in session two, and then a high 31. In session three, a mid 31. I knew I was leaving a lot on the table, so I kept pushing. Session four was about the same, but I was getting fuel starvation with a quarter tank. I went in and paid $7.00/gal for a couple gallons of fuel to give it one last go.

After a warm up lap, my two fastest hot laps are shown in the video.
Lap 1 - 1:31.268
Lap 2 - 1:30.864 (starts at the 2 min mark)

2004 AP2
KW V3s (515 lb springs F&R)
17x9 +45 RPF1s
255 Nitto NT01s all around
J's Racing S2 camber joints
Eibach 32 mm front sway bar
APR GTC-200 wing w/ risers
Mugen style hardtop
Berk headerback exhaust
K&N FIPK intake
Carbotech XP10 & XP8 pads

Before someone points it out, I know I'm not far enough to the left when I begin to enter T9. I'll work up to the edge as I get more familiar with the track. This was my fourth trip here (3 in the S2K, 1 in a Spec RX-7), so I'm still trying to get comfortable driving that fast on the outside of a decreasing radius turn. I can likely carry more speed through T5 if I track out further like a momentum car. Lap 1 was bad, lap 2 was a bit better.

Is this the fastest lap time for an N/A S2K at WSIR? I can't find anything faster than a mid 1:31. I will be back soon for a 1:29 with new tires, front aero, and bigger balls for turn 9

Fast!

This is the fastest NA time I'm aware of; the RS3 record is a 1:31.5. And yes, like you said, you can get into the 29's via T9. The RS3 time was done with a T9 apex of ~104mph, but you made up a TON of time in T2, and T5 compared to the RS3 time; Ted never hit 5th before T3 when he ran his 1:31.5, but takes T9 in 5th.

This is from Kangwoo Park. He's on street tires (i think it says Star Specs)... I'm not sure what the record is for R-comps, but this is supposed to be the street tire s2000 NA record.

but yes, to echo everyone else. nice driving - takes some balls to go fast at that track.

edit: having problems linking the video and getting it to appear... someone else try/fix it for me

Not fastest na. I did a bunch of 30.0s and 30.1s back like 5 years ago in my s2k. 2.0L, but also a race car. never could break into the 29s tho.

regardless you're moving.

Are you using the stock rear sway bar?

Thanks JJ! I feel I owe a lot of this lap time to driving those Spec RX7s around WSIR where we truly had to keep the momentum to shave tenths off our times.

Wow you were doing 1:30.0xx laps 5 years ago before you went FI? Very impressive! Do you have any videos? Do you remember what weight, power, shocks, tires, & aero you had? What do you think prevented you from getting a 29?

Now I really need to get that 29 so I can say I have the (unofficial) fastest N/A S2K on the Fastest Road in the West

Yeah, all the suspension is stock AP2 minus the coilovers, front sway bar, and camber joints.
