Lots of food for thought here.

A troubling read, basically indisputable.

I posted this quote back in January 2010..

[quote]Honda appears to be a 'motor' company that's lost it's way. A few years back they said they were embarking on electric for small cars and diesels for larger cars. Apparently they discovered they couldn't make the gains in diesels that they thought they could, essentially dropped them, and turned to hybreds. Now their R&D departments are being challenged to get much greater mileage out of their existing engines while seemingly dropping one of their core building blocks - performance engines. I sensed they were lost four years ago when in 2005 I participated in their R&D sponsored S2000 design project at Art Center College in Detroit; and time seems to have proven that out.

Much of what the article says is true. Management is lost in a fog. Worse still they don't know who their customer is, nor do they understand the market. It is very difficult for a company to survive or produce viable products if you don't know who your customer is or understand the market.

Maybe soon we will own orphan cars. I better stock up on spare parts.

10 years ago, honda outboards were everywhere and Florida has a lot of outboards. Now there's not even a dealer around here.

Someone told me the only place they're still somewhat strong is in the NE.

I wouldn't be too concerned. I think Honda will be around for a while.

I love my small 8 hp outboard. Did the dealer go out of business because there was no service work?

Now that I think about it, I'm not sure the comparison to General Motors is correct. I think the comparison to Sony would be a better one. Both Sony and Honda were innovative companies and both were highly regarded and respected in their markets. Both companies fell asleep and let their competition pass them by.
