What's in a noisy starter motor?
#11
Interesting read, my S has this noise & I think it's time to do something about it before is stops working completely.
Looks fairly straight forward. Was it as easy as you made it look?

Best way is to a second hand one. clean that up and then get someone who knows where the knock sensor is and how to avoid breaking it to change them over

Nice write up Fester,,, you can't beat a bit of DIY, these threads will be invaluable in a few years as the car knocks on a bit,,and more people will repair rather than replace,

Nice one, well done on doing some decent refurb work, but please please stop calling those reduction gears "cogs". Cogs are wooden things used in old mills, no place in modern technology.

I think the thing to point out is that the starter motor is NOT a sealed unit so it's exposed to weather / dirt / dust / heat from the engine etc etc.

Already got hold of another starter motor now...
It works fine, but I am thinking of stripping it down while it's off the car, to avoid it needing doing at a later date. Now to research information regarding the location/procedure of removing the knock sensor.
