July 30 - North Country - Solidarity Drive For Levi
Time to bag your best friend's wedding, forget your parent's 50th anniversary, order up a sitter to cover the new baby's #1 birthday and otherwise clear your calendar for the big 2011 event in the North Country:
Specifically the Solidarity Drive For Levi on July 30th.
Touring the back roads of Essex County, New York, where the highway surveyors couldn't follow a straight line, where the thinking population has left for California and points south and where the state legislature has declared a safe speed at 55.
Official start is at 10:30 a.m.
Start will be at Exit 28 off Northway (I-87) (Route 74, Ticonderoga, Paradox Lake) This exit is at Northway Milepost 88.1 Exit 28 is 1 3/4 hours north of the Hudson River crossing in Albany and about 50 minutes north of Lake George Village exit. From Clifton Park rest area, probably about 1.5 hours. About 35 minutes north of the Warrensburg Exit and say 30 minutes north of the Chestertown exit (which I think is Route 8 for those coming from the west.
Exit 28 is about 1 hr, 20 min. south of Plattsburgh if you happen to come from that direction.
No real parking area. Pull off the highway, go east a very short distance, cross Route 9 and pull over. Very expensive Sunoco station on right a little way South on Route 9.
Expect slim pickings for lunch. This is a drive, not a dining event. Plus, I haven't found any place at which any sane person would actually want to dine! May scoot to Noonmark Diner in Keene Valley.
I'd post some pictures, but I can't figure out how to use the Gallery. So here are some links to prior drives:

Unwritten Rules:
1. Be alert!
2. Stay in your established travel lanes! The basic NY speed limit is 55 mph. Several of these roads are nothing but (blind) curves but I do not expect to be puttering along at 15 mph. We are likely to encounter motorcycles coming at us from the opposite direction. If we get behind something slow on these roads, we will pull over and wait for it to get a sufficient distance ahead.
3. Drive within your comfort zone and safely. This is not a race. If you lose the drive leader(s) just follow the route and we will wait for you at the next convenient intersection.
4. Slow down in the villages! We will pass through up to eight (8) villages. There may be police in any of these plus on Route 73 (which we may take) We will not be going more than 30 mph through the villages.
5. Don't buzz the locals!

I am in. NFR Jeff, you'll be missed and I know that you'd attend if there was even the slightest chance
EDIT: Pictures of the drive from years past
And the man himself in whose honor we drive - LEVI

Dave, I looked at the maps last weekend. Blue Mountain Lake is pretty far out there, just main roads in and out. Would make for a very long day. I urge you to go up some other time, maybe from the south on 30, 28 or 28N. If you are like me, you can easily spend 3 hours at the museum and just finish one or two exhibits. So I thinbk we'll stick to the back roads of Essex County.
