There are a few of us in the USA that run the mugen ecu. It works fine with 93 or better octane, which is equal to japan's 98 octane rating(see link below). The OBDII is disabled on the mugen ecu so he would need to swich back to the oem ecu to get a reading with a scan tool.

Sorry guys this is incorrect - I have been using ODB-II with my Mugen N1 for a while now.... all parameters are there, just none of the stuff for emissions purposes.

thanks for that coolchrisuk ...

this OBD-II thing is interesting ... is this scanner connected to a laptop, and would it have proprietry software?
is it fairly easy to check whats going on?

small update ... i received the new spark plugs today (BKR8EIX) and installed them.
i went for a quick spin, and the noises are still there.
next week i will try to visit a professional, to make sure that the noises i am hearing are actually pinging/knocking.

i will also visit the race-fuel guys next week because they werent there when i went yesterday.

i was considering switching to the oem ecu .. but the i remembered that i have no cat installed .. even the sensor/wire is removed from the car. will this do any damage with the OEM ecu? it will probably switch on the CEL right? will the CEL go off if i plug in the sensor into the testpipe?

thanks

ok, another small update.

i took it to a specialist tuner today to confirm that the sound is actually ping.

he said that it is definitely "low speed knock".
it does not PING per se, its sort of a light rattling noise only heard in low RPMs ... he said that the sound is light and doesnt actually ring because it is just low-speed knock...

As Sideways said, it will probably go away if i were to use race fuel.

Now, upon his recommendation, i bought a can of TORCO race fuel concentrate .. i will wait until i have a nearly empty tank and will put in a healthy dose of this concentrate, to put the octane up to about 105.
It shouldnt ping then. If it does, there are problems !

Time will tell .... but for now .... RACELOGIC time!!

AND another update.

i was about to start installing the racelogic today so had to remove the ECU. I thought this would be the perfect time to test the car with the OEM ECU.
So I installed the oem ecu and took it for a spin ..
waited until it was hot (3 bars) and did some low-rev tests on 2nd, 3rd and 4th gear. The pinking noise is much much less than before. I think I still hear a very slight ping occasionally, but nowhere near it used to with the Mugen ECU.
Unfortunately, the pinking noise did not go away all alone - it took all my torque away with it lol. Power delivery is not 'immediate', it comes gradually. Makes the car easier to drive though. Probably wouldnt need the racelogic so much with the stock ecu.

so now i will put back the mugen ecu, be careful not to use WOT on low revs, and add TORCO concentrate when i'm running low on fuel to check if that cures it.

Japanese high octane petrol is 100RON not 98.

I have had a couple of Mugen ECUs over the years and can confirm that OBDII is active, and that the knock sensor is disabled along with other emissions systems such as the second exhaust gas sensor and air pump etc. The rev limit is not raised and VTEC crossover remains the same as the OEM ECU.

I always ran my cars with one step colder plugs (Denso 24 or NGK 7), along with Mugen cooling mods, header, exhaust, air intake and decat. At the time the highest RON petrol available in the UK was 98.6 and I never had any knock problems.

The rev limit is raised to 9000 rpm.

Yep, raised from 8900 to 9000 rpm.

@chrisr: it's good to see that it runs fine on 98. I do wonder what Ron our local fuel is. On paper, it's 95. But it is common knowledge that it's less. Some say it's 93, some say it might be really low like 89 or 87.

I will experiment with this torco concentrate, and if it does work, I will use just enough to stop the ping noise. It's not cheap at 25eur per bottle. But if it does work I guess it's well worth it.

just a small update to let you know that i mixed one third of the TORCO concentrate with a full tank of local fuel, and the ping has gone.
I only hear it one tiny bit on very rare occasions .. so it doesnt bother me much anymore.
I'm confident that it would disappear with half a bottle of Torco with a tank of fuel ..
but fuel price has just rocketed once more .. so its already expensive enough to fill it up as it is!

thanks for the replies guys
