ECU code help - "p0410 secondary air inj malf"
ECU code help - "p0410 secondary air inj malf"
My car threw a code today and scan tool showed "p0410 secondary air inj malf"
I treid using the scan tool to clear the code (same method disconnecting the battery) but
the light popped on again after 10-100 miles of driving.
anyone has any idea what's going on before i decide to take it back to honda?

I'm pretty sure I had this code before too.
The secondary pump is used to compress air and pump it into the exhaust line (post-cat), to help burn any remaining carbons. It's for emissions purposes.
Anyway if you had your transmission dropped, they have to remove the air hose that connects the pump to the exhaust. In my case they forgot to reconnect the hose.
Good luck, I don't think it's a major problem at all.

does it have something to do with the air pump???
it reads air inj....air injection?
my tranny has never been dropped before so it's stock from honda...
what's the problem?
the pump in the bumper, isn't that for the A/C???

Code P0410 is associated with the Pulsed Secondary Air System. This system functions when the car is cold by injecting air into the exhaust ports. The amount of air is regulated by an air control valve which is controlled by the ECM. When fresh air reacts with unburned exhaust gasses, the exhaust gas temperature rises. This rise in temperature promotes faster warm up of the catalytic converter, resulting in cleaner emissions during cold start up. The pump activates for a short period (i.e. less then 60 seconds).
Most frequently this code is set by someone revving up an unloaded cold engine (i.e. lets hear that exhaust/intake). The system is temperature specific. Let the car come down to ambient and then reset the ECU. Warm it up and see if the code still shows (if you are using either a PGM Scan Tool or OBD Explorer make sure you request a new set of data!). If you still get a MIL light drive around for a mile or two....it may clear itself. If it does not the go under the drivers side bumper just behind the fake intake and check the wiring. The air pump has a large hose coming from it so it's easy to find (it's location is also the reason the CAI guys go to the passenger side).

Have you installed a CAI??? There's an air control solenoid valve that many of us have at one time or another connected backwards. If you do, it makes little hissing noises and eventually throws a code. Check your vacuum lines to make sure they are all connected to the right places.

would the hose on the valve cover (that hose on the valve cover that goes into the intake pipe)
the cause of the ecu code 'cuz it was disconnected for a little while while engine was running?
jschmidt: what wiring?? where is it located?
the reverend: no CAI installed here, stock air box.
Utah S2K: i checked the large hose and it seems fine. i can't find the pump or the wiring that you're
talking about, though. sorry. might that be the problem??
i still have the code...the car drives normal, vtec still kicks hard but it's annoying to see a code even
though it isn't a major problem... everytime i clear the code using the scan tool, it comes back
on in a few minutes or so after/during a drive. the scan tool i use is OBD-2 (www.obd-2.com)
it's a software w/ a obd-2 connector that hooks up to my laptop.
