Default Malibu Drive FRIDAY Sep 11, 2015

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX XXXXXXXX
UPDATE Sep 2, 2015:
Cut off date for sign up will be Tuesday September 8 at 6pm. No additional sign ups will be accepted after that. I will need to be creating our run groups Tuesday night, printing up route sheets, and making sure all the last little bits are in order.

If you have at any point indicated some possibility of uncertainty (you know who you are -- maybe you have asked "just in case I get lost or can't make it in time" or maybe you have indicated you have to be somewhere after and just aren't sure), I need for you to please confirm between now and Tuesday. It might not seem like a big deal to you if you just don't bother to show up or if you show up unannounced, but it actually *is* a big deal.

Just don't flake. So not cool.

Also, please be sure to have at least $5 in cash on you per person. It's for the snack stop. You might not need it, but if you do need it and you don't have it, it won't be pleasant.

Q/A section updated. Check it out.

Who: You and your canyon-ready car
. .(rental cars ok, but no SUVs, minivans, or other rolling-road-block type vehicles please)
What: Malibu Drive
When: FRIDAY September 11, 2015 from 10:30am to ~4:30ish pm
Where: Malibu, CA near here (https://www.google.com/maps/place/Malibu,+CA+90265/@34.0347766,-118.7034357,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m2!3m1!1s0x80e81fb34f2f868d:0x243c7 188bdcc8d90)
Why: because you want to see scenic Malibu, the famous Mulholland Highway, and drive some cool roads
How: With gusto!

Hi All!

Heads up! Anyone coming to town for the weekend of Sep 11-13, if you can come into town a little early, I'm organizing a drive in Malibu on Friday September 11, 2015. I have to cap the entries to 9 cars per lead driver. I definitely have 4 lead drivers confirmed, and possibly a fifth. So we'll start this out with space for 36 to sign up.

The meet up time will be about 10:30am (for those who might be staying in Irvine, this gives you travel time), meet and greet for 30 minutes, safety czarina speech at 11am, final potty break at 11:20, and first group rolls out at 11:30. For planning purposes, the meet spot will be *near* Pacific Coast Highway and Malibu Canyon Road https://www.google.com/maps/place/Malibu,+CA+90265/@34.0347766,-118.7034357,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m2!3m1!1s0x80e81fb34f2f868d:0x243c7 188bdcc8d90 . I specifically say *near* because there are three spots under consideration now (for various reasons) and they are all within less than a mile of that spot, so I'm calling it *near* that spot for now so you can plan accordingly. This also gives us a fall-back in case something unpreditable happens and we have to adjust accordingly. There are gas stations near there or along PCH on the way to that spot. For those who sign up, I'll give you lists of gas stations.

The drive itself will be about 75-90 miles (I'm finalizing some changes to the route and I need to recon drive it multiple times *during the week* to make sure it's doable in the time allocated) and will include a drive by of the Pepperdine "Wave of Flags" 9/11 Memorial, (http://ehssafetynewsamerica.com/2012...lags-memorial/), one short stop at the famous overlook at The Snake on Mulholland Highway (Leno won't be there so we won't be hanging out long), one brief stop for snack and potty break near the beach, cover roads you have seen on TV and in YouTube videos, and then will end at arguably one of the most exciting driving roads on the Malibu coast. The roads are very technical and will require a LOT of paying attention. The scenery is gorgeous (for your passenger) so bring a dashcam, GoPro, or a regular camera for your navigator. You, the driver, will be busy. End time can vary depending on the pace of the groups and any local traffic we may encounter. On a Friday afternoon, I'm hoping we can complete this by 4pm. I know that 75-90 miles sounds like a two hour drive, but you have to allow for the technical level of the roads, a couple of stops, and someone being a little slower or maybe someone getting car sick. Yeah... bring Dramamine for your passenger, okay?

If you own walkie-talkies, please bring them. We use those to communicate during the drive. Definitely helps if there is a mechanical issue or someone gets lost (note: I plan these things out so it's nearly impossible for anyone to get lost, but you know... ).

Any questions? (rental cars are fine, but be sure it can keep up. maybe sign up for the the EZ Does It group)

And one I stole from Patty Klein:

The FAQ I use for the EOQ should cover a lot of questions:
https://www.s2ki.com/s2000/topic/111...t__p__23512255

THIS SPACE RESERVED FOR NEW Q&A AS I GET THEM:
Q: I'm not sure if I will have the day off or not. Can I just show up?
A: No. A lot of planning goes into this and people just showing up (as well as people just flaking) definitely throws it off. I understand that it's rough to schedule sometimes, but I really do go out of my way to work with people and try to make this fun. But even so, we just can't always accommodate every request. I wish we could.

Q: I signed up, but now I'm not sure if I can still make it. What should I do?
A: You should take your name off the list before the deadline Tuesday September 8 at 6pm. Or leave it on, flake at the last minute, post some "I overslept" comment on the morning of the event, don't show up, and see how that works out for ya. (hint: I don't recommend the latter)

Q: I might have to leave early because of another commitment. Is that a problem?
A: No, it's not a problem! Get in touch with me right away and I'll work with you to create a plan that will get you where you need to be and still allow you to enjoy most of the drive. There are points along the drive where you can peal off and head to the nearest freeway and I will help you locate those points. So long as I know what you need, I can help you plan. We will let the lead driver in your group know so that there is no confusion if/when you have to depart the group.

Q: I can't make the drive, but I can get over to the optional dinner stop after the drive. Can I just come to that?
A: Sure. Reel Inn Restaurant is at 18661 Pacific Coast Highway, Malibu CA, 90265. Not sure how late we will stay there probably not very) but we should arrive sometime between 3 and 4pm. I recommend you research your parking options ahead of time if you figure to arrive later than 4pm.

Sign up here:

Please sign up and choose your preferred driving group. "EZ does it" is for those out for the first time on a group drive or those who just want to take it a little easier, enjoy the views, and not scare yourself silly (much). "Medium" is for those who have done several group drives before and who are completely comfortable at a brisk pace in the corners. "Balls-out" is fast, but sane; there is NO crossing double-yellow and no stupid risks; this is for people who know the Malibu roads well, or have done a lot of group drives, are *very* comfortable with their car, and know the risks involved with law enforcement and radar. LE is always present and it's just a question of where. The lead drivers are aware of most of the common "trap" locations and we try to, shall we say, adjust accordingly in those spots.

If you own a two-way radio (walkie-talkie), bring it. If you don't, consider getting one. They are really handy on a drive and you can get nice rechargeable ones for less than $50 from Radio Shack or Frys.

PLEASE do NOT sign up as a maybe and take a spot away from someone who is coming into town from great distance and needs to plan in advance. And, as always, please do not flake. I make up the run groups based on the sign ups in advance and it takes time and effort to do that. If you flake out and no-show, I have to quickly rearrange the groups at the last minute on the fly and it slows everything down for everyone.

example sign up: <screenname here> (car color & type) [preferred group: EZ does it, medium, balls-out]

0) RMurphy (Yellow S2000) EZ does it
0) Cargo (black Abarth) Medium
0) Human668 (black CRZ) Balls-out

I don't need tickets for some time yet, otherwise I'd take my chances. Yes, I will be in the S (forgot to add that and offer being on my phone as an excuse).
