How would the DMV and insurance companies handle this in the US? It lists your car color, but if it changes based on the time of year or if its raining...

Goodamn, the comments on that site frighten me. Unless they're all at the public library surfing the web, that means that they all have enough income to have internet service, which means that someone has employed all of those mouth breathers.

Possibly the dumbest idea ever for a car coating. So, when it starts to rain your car is a blotchy mess. In cold weather, hot spots like the hood and exhaust outlet area are a blotchy mess while the rest of the car adapts to environmental conditions. Maybe a possibility for an all electric vehicle. Cool trick, not really practical.

I like the paint that color shifts based on the intensity and angle of light independent of thermal energy. I think Ford was one of the first auto manufacturers to experiment with it. My SLK has it in the form of the special order "Caspian Blue" paint. It can shift from almost black in low light to dark blue to a lighter metallic blue to a metallic green based on the available light. Hence the Caspian Blue label relating it to the various hues of sea water. I've had several people comment that the car changed color as I turned a corner and the light angle changed. But when this happens it's instantaneous and consistent from the point of view of the observer. As I remember the Ford variant was more a of a black to purple to metallic cherry color shift. But essentially the same paint technology.

Pretty cool paint. How many variant colors are possible from the heat sensitive paint? I could see a 911 done up with it; they really showcase unique and bold colors better than most cars made.

maybe a racing strip painted as this would be cool. Otherwise, ugly. Rather have permanent pokadots on my car.
