Default MOT - Are Headlight Washers Mandatory?

Hi Guys,

Quick question that hopefully someone can help me out with.

I have a 2002 S2000, totally standard. It was re-sprayed white about 4 months ago, and in the process the sprayer removed the headlight washers and never re-fitted them. I dont want to put them on as it looks very clean without them. When I press teh light water squirt button on the dash, the motor turns but water just trickles out from the engine bay, so I know all the gubbins is there if I need to re-fit them - should just be a case of buying some from eBay and some pipe, drilling a couple of holes and job done. However, I dont want to.

Do I need to put them on for an MOT? Im unsure of the regulations around it. As I understand it, all cars with factory fitted xenons must have light washers - does a 2002 S2k have xenons? Do they actually check this / care about it?

Cheers.

Will

Technically you need them. Will an MOT station notice? Probably not.

Sorry but I'm pretty sure you do if you have Xenons. And you will have Xenons.

I was of the understanding that if they had Xenons fitted, washers had to be there. Certainly seems that is the case with NI test centres

This has come up a few times in detail, so I'd try a search. I think the wording is something like if washers are fitted they should be functional. I have had mine smoothed and as there are no buttons inside to activate the headlight wash there is no way of knowing they were there and it hasn't been an issue in the last two MOTs (most recent was last week).

Rob1980 is right. They don't have to be present but if they are present but not working that's a fail.

At the minute even if they are fitted but not working it's still a pass, the headlight washers are not part of the test.
