Breaking the Mold

The vast majority of Honda S2000 builds we come across are either track, drag strip, or street/show car related. And that's for a good reason, of course - the car excels in those areas. But that simple fact didn't stop S2KI forum member goldenfri from doing something a little different with his ride.

Something Different

Goldenfri was no stranger to SCCA Rallycross, having competed on dirt for many years. He had won a few races in his day driving a Honda DX and Subaru RS but wanted to do something a little different. Needless to say, he achieved that with his '02 S2000.

Test Run

His AP1 fit within the rules for the Stock RWD class, and the factory hardtop was sure to keep the dust out. So after wrapping up a class win in 2017, he decided to give it a try.

Bucking Bronco

"It was a handful for sure, like trying to control a bucking bronco that only went sideways," goldenfri recalled. "It was really hard to control, I had my doubts but decided to go ahead with it for 2018 anyway."

Surprising Success

Goldenfri fitted his S2000 with snow tires and disconnected the rear sway bar first. Those little changes made a big difference in the way the car handled, for the better. And surprisingly, he was somewhat competitive right off the bat.

Minor Adjustments

The biggest obstacle for goldenfri was adjusting his driving style to the rear-wheel drive format. However, the car exhibited good manners regardless, even landing him a second place finish in the modified RWD category.

Little Wonder

So there you have it - as good as the S2000 is in so many different ways, apparently, it makes a good Rallycross car, too. The wonders apparently never cease!
