How Big Is Too Big to Fit Comfortably in an S2000?

Being blessed with height isn't always a good thing, as one prospective Honda S2000 owner found out the hard way.

Space Needed

By most accounts, Honda's S2000 is basically perfect. With 50/50 weight distribution, a rev-happy engine, manual transmission, rear-wheel-drive, and a drop-top, what more could you possibly want? Well, if you're not height-challenged like S2Ki forum member jeff.thun, perhaps a little more legroom?

Too Big?

"I'm in the market for a nice fun car and I've always loved the S2000," jeff.thun said. "There aren't many S2Ks for sale where I live. The nearest one is a three hour drive away, so it's not as easy to just sit in one and find out if I fit. I'm 6"6, 260 pounds, not fat but I am big in the shoulder area. I used to compete in local men's physique shows and play basketball competitively, so I do have that bodybuilder/athletic build. Before I drive three hours to check on the S2K, would I even fit or would it just be a waste of time?"

Highly Doubtful

According to forum member WVCR-V, the OP might be just a tad too tall for the S2000. "I’m 6’2” 220 pounds and lift weights, also used to do bodybuilding. I would not want to be any bigger in any dimension for this car. I installed BYS seat rails and still fantasize about being smaller while driving this car. I have fairly broad shoulders/lats and the seat bolsters could be wider. See if you can find a member in your area who will let you sit in their car just to see, but I’m kind of doubting you’ll be comfortable."

Broomstick Test

For fellow big guy JasonMG, the problem is a little bit different. "I'm 6'3, over 230, mostly muscle and broad shoulders. My issue is entirely in the length of my torso. I'd never be able to track the car because I'd fail the broomstick test without a helmet, let alone with one. I do have a BYS seat rail but still kept the stock seat. It helped but not enough to make me think you'd fit easily. After 2 hours in mine, I'm ready to stop. My other main vehicle is a Jeep, which is comparatively huge. I can drive that forever with no discomfort."

Scary Problem

RobM has the same problem, including one that's kinda scary when you think about it. "I can't imagine being 6'6" in an S2000. I'm 6'1", the car is completely stock and I'm very comfortable. But the top 1" of my head is above the top of the windshield. At 6'6" it seems like the top of the windshield would be eye level. If you moved the seat forward enough to get your head lower, your knees would hit the steering wheel. My knees barely fit below it."

Killing the Experience

And as 1nate7 points out, it could seriously mess up the driving experience. "At your height, the driving ergonomics will not be ideal on a stock car. The steering wheel will be down between your knees and there is no adjustment. The best way to solve the height issue is a side mount bucket seat like the Recaro Pole Position, but it is very tight in the shoulder area. Aftermarket seats with a wider shoulder area can rub the door panels or block the center storage compartment. If you get a chance, it doesn't hurt to try one out, but I don't think you would be comfortable or enjoy the stock experience."

Additional Options

Member jackmugen02 offers up some additional advice to make driving an S2000 a little more enjoyable. Or practical, for that matter. "+1 for the Recaro Pole Positions and PCI slider seat rails V2. You could also add an ASM Steering hub and 350mm wheel, with or without quick release. Or a flat bottom OEM wheel."

Perfect Fit

But in reality, the vast majority of S2000 members are shorter and smaller than the OP. And the car fits folks like Troystaten quite nicely. "Sounds like you might be a tight squeeze in this car. But I would suggest you go try one. I am a little over 6 feet tall and slim and the car fits me like a glove. Great car but not roomy."

Help Needed

So far, it looks like the OP might be out of luck. But then again, you never know until you try, right? So we want to know - how big are you, and do you fit in an S2000 comfortably? Head over here and let us (and the OP) know if there's any sort of hope for us taller folks!
