Daily Slideshow: Civic Type R Continues to Set New Records

The newest iteration of Honda's popular hot hatch-back, the Civic Type R has been on a world tour as of late, breaking records everywhere it goes. The category in which the sporty Civic is shattering previous track times is the front-wheel-drive production car category. Just recently, the Honda carved through one of the crown jewels of the Formula 1 calendar, the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium. 

The time to beat has been set at 2 minutes and 53.72 seconds by the Type R, surpassing the record set by the previous generation's model by over 3 seconds. 

I could go on for hours talking about the absolute thriller of a racetrack that it is, the intricacies of entering and exiting each of the 20 corners of the 4.35-mile track, as well as the great motorsport history behind it. To most fans of racing, the first thing that comes to mind when talking about Spa is the legendary left-right-left turns 3 through 5 known as 'Eau Rouge.' Former FIA WEC LMP2 class world champion and current Super GT driver for Honda was the man behind the wheel of the Civic to take it around the Belgian track.

Prior to the record-breaking appearance in Belgium, the Honda Civic Type R had been setting top lap times around the world's renown racetracks. The hot hatch set a record of 7 minutes and 43.8 seconds at the Nurburgring's Nordschleife, also known as the green hell. The Honda then followed that great run with another record, this time at Magny-Cours Grand Prix circuit in France with a fast time of 2 minutes and 1.51. seconds.

The impressive performance of the new Civic Type R can be demonstrated in its quick lap times, just as well as its power output numbers. With a 2.0-liter turbocharged l4 engine producing 306HP and 295 lb-ft of torque, Honda's newest thunderstorm can achieve a 0-60 time of 5.0 seconds

The Civic is on a world tour and aiming to shatter as many world records as possible along the way. Since Spa, the hot hatch has already set Silverstone on fire and coming up this summer, it will be tearing through Estoril, as well as the Hungaroring as it visits Europe's most scenic racing destinations.
