Both Fast & Furious S2000s Were Actually the Same Exact Car

They might have looked totally different, but Johnny Tran and Suki's S2000s were actually the same car underneath.

Same Thing

Fans of the Fast & Furious franchise are already well aware of the fact that the movie series has featured two distinctly styled Honda S2000s over the years. One, Suki's pink machine, the other, a black version is driven by Johnny Tran. But what we didn't know, until now, is that these seemingly two different cars were actually the same ride all along.

Interesting Development

This interestingly development comes to us from F&F's technical adviser, Craig Lieberman. Lieberman has been serving up all kinds of interesting tidbits from his time on the movie set over the years via his YouTube channel recently, and the story of this singular S2000 that served two roles was the subject of an entire video he recently posted.

Budget Moves

This isn't terribly surprising, of course. Movies operate on budgets, which tend to be quite small when you're filming something a once unknown entity like F&F. In fact, producers didn't even have the money to buy an S2000 for the first film. So they rented Johnny Tran's car and left it its original black color with a stock drivetrain.

Familiar Car

Funny enough, the car's owner was the same person who played Danny Yamada in the film - who drove the white Honda Civic depicted in the first race. The S2000 went through a series of changes over the years, including multiple paint jobs and color changes, as well as a host of wheel swaps. But it always had the same Veilside body kit - just not the supercharger we all saw later on.

Late Addition

During filming, the S2000 made do with its stock drivetrain. The Comptech supercharger kit wasn't installed until after the filming of the first movie was finished, but it was in place by the time the car showed up at the film's Hollywood premiere. Various HKS suspension parts and an HKS exhaust soon followed.

Major Transformation

Once production for 2 Fast 2 Furious had begun, Lieberman started working on figuring out what cars would be featured in the sequel. They decided that Suki should drive a pink S2000, something that would match her own personal style. At this time, they had a little bit of money to spend, so they purchased the car from the original owner.

Extensive Changes

Obviously, it took a ton of work to transform Tran's S2000 into Suki's S2000. The team spent a lot of money making it all work, including $11k for the paint job and airbrush work alone. But these are just a few of the many interesting things we've learned about the F&F franchise, thanks to Lieberman's recent efforts to document them all in his informative clips. Hopefully, that'll continue for some time, too.
