I saw Avatar on opening weekend. We went to see it in IMAX 3D, but showed up a little late and ended up in the front row! Nevertheless, it was a good movie and we enjoyed it. Last weekend, we went to see Sherlock Holmes, which was excellent.

Haven't been watching too many movies the passed couple of years but these past two weeks I've discovered Redbox and I've seen:

World's Best Dad
Star Trek
Paranormal Activity
Bruno
Angels and Demons
I Love You Man

..and am watching at this moment Terminator Salvation.

Redbox is fookin' awesome!

A local member/owner worked for Redbox a few years back (he may still work for them). I need to look up Ryan (BlackFX35) to see what he's up to these days.

With the new baby, haven't really been maximizing our Netflix account. The last movie I watched was The International. VWs Autostad served as the HQ of the bank, and there's a cool shootout in the Guggenheim, which after watching the extras, learned they constructed a replica set for... pretty amazing, given the unique architecture (no flat surfaces).

sitting on top of the player is Religulous.

My parents are coming into town, and think we'll all go see Avatar. Is it worth seeing in 3-D? (won't be IMAX, but the theater in downtown Evanston has both regular and 3-D options)

Phil,
I also watched The International not too long ago and was pleasantly suprised - good flick. As for Avatar, my experience was so-so because I sat so close, so if you're going to make the trek to a nearby IMAX theater, be sure to get good seats otherwise it won't be worth the +$15 for the movie ticket. I'm pretty sure the IMAX at Navy Pier has assigned seating, but I could be wrong about that. I went to the IMAX theater in Lincolnshire right before the movie started assuming that, and therefore ending up in the front row. The movie has some underlying "save the world, go green" and "yay for Gaia" tone to it, but if that doesn't bug you, go for it. It's 95% action flick with some amazing special effects.

FWIW, I actually enjoyed Sherlock Holmes over Avatar because it engages the viewer, as opposed to Avatar which pretty much spoon feeds you the action.

Hehe, I've seen The International twice and still liked it the second time.

I was lucky enough to get to the theater an hour early for Avatar with my friends, allowing us to see it in (non-IMAX) 3D, and it definitely was a sweet experience. I really want to see Sherlock Holmes now, especially since I've been reading more of the stories recently just to understand the original source material more.

I've seen a bunch of other movies semi-recently, but I don't remember many of them well enough to give an accurate critique.

Yeah avatar front row blew chunks because the focus area was very focused on whatever the camera wanted you to be looking at... You'd get dizzy or feel weird when you look away from the focus area... So if you go see it in 3d go see it in IMAX but make sure you get like middle to last row..

Here is a great rant about that exactly problem:

I was just checking for where other IMAX theaters were besides Navy Pier, and Linolnshire looked the closest. Will have to see if everyone wants to go that far, keeping in mind to arrive extra early, vs walking across the street for non-IMAX...

It was interesting watching all the extras on The International bluray, how much thought went into the architecture for the various locals... the use of the Autostad structure to portray the huge, cold, impersonal, overwhelming nature of the firm, and then I look at the, albeit smaller, very similarly structured metal and glass with huge open lobby area building we work in... probably not what the Dutch were after at the time, but is fitting now.
