Default Worn RE750 245/40R1791W Rears, Want to keep front

So. . my rear tires are getting to the point where I'll need to think about replacing them soon.

I have RE750 245/40R17 91W's on the rears and RE750 215/40R 17 83W on the fronts.

The fronts still have lots of tread left.

I saw that the RE760's are the replacements for the RE750's . . pretty much the same rubber and same grip and same noise level as the 750's.

But that they have a different (non-directional) tread pattern.

Am I able to put the RE760's on my rears and keep the directional 750s on the front with no problems ?

Or should I go with something else ?

Not a problem.

Are the RE760's supposed to last as long as the RE750's ?

A friend told me they are a low grade tire. I thought they were a pretty good tire, but not the stickiest, high performance tire out there.

"Low grade tire"? Hardly. Here's how they compare to other UHP summer tires:

They should have about the same longevity as the RE750s they replaced.

I guess if you were to compare it to the S02 or S03 (or any of the other higher grade Bridgestones) then yeah, I guess you could say the RE750/760 are "low grade".

I currently have the 750s in the same dimensions as you do, and when the rears go out, I'm going with the 760s. The mismatch shouldn't be a big deal, as the specs of 750 and 760 are practically identical.

You can look up the specs here: http://bridgestonetire.com/tireselec...uct_BS_EN.aspx

I tracked them with a 3 Series and they were fine. They are a direct replacement to the RE750 and they are better handling.
If you are looking for a longer wearing performance tire they fit the bill.
If I can help just let me know.

Ok guys. . I think I get it. 760s will be fine on the rears. . .

Thanks all for the help. I called TireRack the other day and the guy I spoke with (not Jim) told me that I can't mix 750's on the front with 760s on the rear and that I needed to change all 4 tires OR get directional tires on the rear and he recommended Fusion tires. . . . then the input from my friend on the 760's all jacked me up even more. . . .

I had the shop put the 760's on the rear wheels today. Still have the 750's on the fronts.

It seems like the car does not handle as well.

With the 750's the car felt like it was on rails going around corners and if I was going down the road and and tested by moderately testing the steering back and forth in my lane while going about 70 it also stayed nice and flat and felt like it was dialed in nice and tight and responsive.

With the 760's I am feeling something like body sway around corners and when i do the steering test. It does not feel ask crisp and controlled as when I had the 750's on the back.

I am looking for commentary and feedback on this - . . . has anyhone experienced teh same kind of handling change when going to the 760's ?

Could it be because the 750's are still on the front ? or because of how much the rears are inflated ? . . . ? ?

I want my old feeling and handling back.

Brand new tires with full 10/32 tread depth are going to have a LOT more tread squirm than tires worn down to 2/32 (at the treadwear indicators). That probably accounts for a lot of what you are feeling now. Dunno how well the RE750s were rated, but it looks like the RE760s are rated pretty highly amongst UHP Summer tires for cornering stability and steering response (indicators of sidewall stiffness).

Another factor is whether the tires have been fully scrubbed in. Once scrubbed in (maybe 50-100 miles?), you might notice better grip and feel. Maybe...

I found out last night that the shop put 32 lbs of air in my new rears.

But that they had increased my fronts to 40 lbs. I had the fronts at 32.. . .and then they put more in . . . .not sure why they did that.

Seemed to drive a little better after that. But since I had coffee on board I couldn't wring it out for fear of spilling caffeine all over the place.

I mean we are supposed to run at the pressure on the door jamb and not the rated max pressure printed on the tire sidewall, right ?
