Why is Tire Rack so expensive?

I find Tire Rack is best for a tire and wheel deal. If you are buying just tires, then the shipping, mounting an balance fees eat up the savings. I have done well when they have close out prices.

I have yet to find any shop in town that even comes close to the Tire Rack price even with shipping. I bought 2 OEM S02's for my car and Tirerack was $158 a piece plus $28 total shipping. The cheapest I could find locally was $218 for each tire and was over $500 with tax and install. My total having them shipped to an installer and put on was $376.

Maybe its standardized pricing? I've encountered times when I've purchased tires from a direct retailer, but was told to pay cash to get a cheaper price and to avoid taxes. This is likely one of the reasons buying from a store could be cheaper oppose to buying online. But, tire rack does have competitive pricing compared to some, and their customer service and knowledge about the times they sell is excellent.
For example, i called one tire shop and asked for some quotes for some tires. I told the shop that i was debating between re050's and rt615's. The guy told me that the falken's sidewalls are probably stiffer because its a wider tire, and ask anyone who's tried both, the bridgestones sidewalls are stiffer than the falkens.

Sorry it took me so long to get back to you. Our prices are all based on how we buy the tires. Brecause we go tturn the enventory quicker when the mfg's raise the prices we adjust the prices quicker. They were probably working off older stock. Nobody in the business buys tires better than we do. I think if you look at shipping versus sales tax you will find we are competitive. We also have a much larger selection of tires versus going locally. The local guys also have not driven the tires they sell and can't tell you which tire is the best for the application.
