Ok Guys,

I'm pretty new to buying aftermarket wheels. I'm wanting to keep everything as close to the oem spec's as I can. I've studied the above posts and think I understand it, but I want to make sure. For reference I'm gonna use a wheel that I'm interested in, The Rota Torque which comes in 17 x 7.5 (48 offset) front, and 17 x 8 (48 offset) rear.

On the front, to my understanding, this wheel would be 1/2 inch wider than the oem wheel. But according to the calculations, this wheel will fit about the same with the 48mm offeset as the oem with 55mm offset, right? Will the OEM tire fit on this rim?

On the back, if I understand the first post right (which I'm not sure I do), if I used the 17 x 8 (48 offset) wheel, then the wheel will stick out 8mm farther????????? Will the oem tire fit this?

I'm not stupid or lazy, I just want to make sure I understand whats posted here. Thanks in advance to anyone who helps me out

 

I believe your OEM rim is also 17 X 7.5 up front, therefore, it is the same diameter and width. What's different is the offset, which is 7mm less than OEM, thus, making it stick out 7mm further, so no, it's not the same in this sense. And yes, the OEM tire will fit on this rim because it is the same diameter and width. Bottom line .......... This will work.

You have a 17 X 8.5 rim on the back as OEM. This tire is 0.5" narrower but the OEM tire will still fit onto this. You may just have to adjust tire pressure (less) a bit to ensure proper tread pressure on the road as the bead is pulled in slightly.
You have 0.5" less width, so it will stick out LESS by 0.25". But the OEM rim is closer to 65mm offset, which is 17mm more. 1/4" = about 6mm. This will stick out about 10mm (or about 0.4") more than OEM. Bottom line ............. This will work.

According to the first post my AP2's on the front are 17x7 front and 17x8.5 rear.
How did you get that the Rota's have only 7mm difference in offset from the oems?
The oem's have 65 and the rota's have 48.....wouldnt that be 17mm?

What it boils down to is that the more offset, the less they will stick out...........but in this case using a narrower or wider wheel in combination with less offset, you can come up with the same, or close results.

Or maybe I'm totally off, and trying to combine apples & oranges.

 

Let me address the point about the OEM front rim. You are right, the first post does say 7" width. Somehow, I got that they were 7.5" width (musta been thinking OEM 16" rears). So, to ammend my calculations, those fronts will stick out another 1/4" beyond the 7mm of my first calculation, so 13mm further than OEM (~ 1/2"). The OEM fronts have 55mm offset (not 65). 65mm offset is on the OEM rears.
Sorry for the confusion.
More width, the more they stick out. More offset, the less they stick out. So, if you have more width, you need more positive offset to keep the relative rim face placement the same.

 

I gotcha...............I was looking at the wrong offset...........sorry about the confusion.......

ok, so theoretically.........if I wanted to keep the front the same and use this 7.5 inch wide rim...............I would acutally have to find a wheel that had an offset of +63mm?

Ok, just one more, in another thread a guy was asking if some Rota D2's would fit. A responce said they wouldn't because the brakes wouldnt clear..........is this true? And if so, is this due to the offset, or something completly different?

 

Too many numbers gone under the bridge, so to finalize ......................
OEM rim = 7" width, 55mm offset
7.5" is 1/2" wider, but only 1/4" of it sticks out the front ................. 1/4" = 6.3mm, so you need a rim with 61mm offset to have it sit the same. However, sitcking out 1/4" is not a bad thing.

I am not familiar with the Rota D2. I remember seeing that thread and if memory serves me correctly, that's a 17" rim with adequate offset, right? All you need is a 16" rim with at least 55mm offset to clear the brakes. Unless the D2 has some sort of really weird backspacing or strangely angled spokes, I don't see why it would not clear the brakes. That was a confusing response but maybe the guy knows something.
