Default What wheels for more grip

Hey guys,

I was on the CCW thread and those guys are running some pretty wide tires (285 wide) on 18 inch wheels. I'm debating if I should switch as well as I'd like more grip even if it means going to 18" wheels. Track guys, what setup do you currently have?
  1. I currently run a square setup 17x10 +55 with 255 tires on all 4 corners.
  2. The car has rolled fenders (no pull) and they fit great.
  3. As I'm boosted, I'd like more grip.
  4. I do track the car on road courses.

OEM fenders or Widebody? You're at the limit for OEM fenders with what wheels are currently available. I'm trying to get 18x10.5 +65 wheels to do 265 square.
Also interesting to note - that a 255r18 stretched on an 18x10.5 wheel is marginally faster and more consistent than a 255r17 on a 17x10. All the ASM gridlife guys are running 18x10.5s.

If you're wide body - go pick up some 18x11 +52 wheels from Apex - run 295 square.

295/30R18 on some 18x10 or 18x11 is a pretty popular time attack setup

More importantly, what tire are you running?

I'd say no on sticking 295s on a 10" wide wheel. Pinching a fat tire onto a narrow wheel does not necessarily increase grip, and it definitely comes at the expense of feel and responsiveness.

Tirerack did some fairly extensive testing on this. Gonna copy/paste myself from the Apex thread.

they tested:

245 on 8" and 9" rims

Yea 18x11 is definitely a bit better than 18x10, but they can be harder to get

OEM body. Thanks for the widebody suggestion. I do wonder if those Voltex flair on the setup you’re proposed would get full wheel travel.

A bunch or different 200tw tires. V730, RT660, and AO52.

This is a question for @s2000Junky he fit 295’s under a stock body in the rear. It is possible. You do not want to stuff a 295 on a 10 inch wide wheel. You need at least 11 or maybe 11.5 even. 18’s give a lot more tire options in these sizes. It’s not easy and you’ll need custom wheels like a ccs or at least other options that allow for you to pick specific widths and offsets. The front is a much more difficult challenge and usually needs wider fenders for anything past a 255. With the wheel turning it makes it more challenging.

this guy runs what looks like a similar setup. pretty sure he has clearance the whole motion. He runs 285s.

you can check out his footage on track - https://www.youtube.com/@grips2k845/videos

As far as OEM body, i'm gonna hold out to see what wheels Apex decides to make next. If they don't make a wheel I want, i'm gonna probably look at pulling the trigger on some custom wheels from these guys - BSPK Forged.
they look to have pretty positive feedback for people that have purchased sets for multiple different chassis. https://www.s2ki.com/forums/wheels-t...eview-1218531/

Specs i'm going to order 18x10.5 +70 x4 wheels. I'll adjust the front with spacers to be able to run a square setup on OEM fenders.

If you want to run a staggered setup, you could do 18x11 +70 in the rear with 295s - the rear wheel wells have a ton of inboard clearance.

Manga - I think junky was running an 11.5" wheel - he eventually did get overfenders for running 305s or 315s in the rear i think. Let's see if he responds to confirm.
