Default What do you usually pay for a mount & balance?

Perhaps it is just another sign that I am getting old, but I'm constantly shocked at what things cost these days. I just received 4 new Sumi HTR ZIII's and took them to get mounted. I put my car on jack stands in my garage, threw all 4 rims (with old tires on them) in the back of my truck and also brought the new Sumitomos with me, so they didn't even have to put my car up on the lift to remove anything. I drop them off and come back 2 hours later.............$125 ($30+ per corner). Seemed over the top to me. I have tires mounted on a semi-regular basis so it's not like I am totally out of the loop but still.

I live in a small rural town so I really only have 1 place to go. What do the rest of you usually pay?

That's a little high. I recently paid ~$20 a wheel. That said, they also mounted the front tires on the driver side and the rears on the passenger side, like I was prepping for circle-track. Maybe I should find a place that charges $30 a wheel; my luck might be better...

$15-20 a wheel is what I usually see. Yeah, your price seems high.

We charge 25 a wheel at my shop. There is absolutely no profit in tires anyway. The money comes from the mount and balance fee. You pay the same at our shop if you buy the tires from us or if you bring your own. On a set of 4 high end michelin truck tires, which are the most profitable. We make about 75 bucks. Thats on a 1000$ set of tires. Our tire machine cost us 10,000$ and the balancer was about 4,000$. We have to pay a tire disposal fee per tire, plus pay to have them hauled off, and the wieghts and valve stems cost several dollars per tire. Even at 30 at tire, after the tech is paid, the shop owner is barely breaking even. We sell tires really only as a convenience to the customer, and because tires sells lead to alignments, brake jobs, struts, etc. Next time just save yourself the hassle and take the car to the shop. You'll pay the same and won't have to do any work.

I usually go to walmart or costco (some costcos dont let you bring in tires you didnt buy there though). I paid $46 to have 4 old tires taken off and 4 new mounted and balanced at my local walmart using touchless machines. Ive heard of people getting it done at costco for $40 out the door. Americas tire charged me $113 about 2 years ago and I havent gone back since.

I get them done for $75 for 4 tires mounted and balanced at one 6 motorsports. Most places around here(Chicago) charge 25$ a wheel.

$10 per wheel at firestone for me You just have to tell them that your price matching a place like costco or walmart and that there price is that low and they will do it, or at least my local firestone did.

Free here, I do my own tires, lofs,....well everything actually. Your price doesn't really seem to high to me. If all depends on where you go. My dealership is actually kind of low but only cause we're next to 3 tire stores (tire kingdom, midas, sears) so we have to be low to compete with them. Like japhethwar said, most places don't make money on tires, it just leads to upsells. Even when we do our buy 3 get 1 free sale, we really don't save much.
