Wider tires help disperse vehicle weight, thus, making the ride smoother, but on crappy pavement the lack of give makes the impacts more pronounced. You are correct though, you can run a wider tire on a smaller wheel as well, but I don't like the "jelly like" handling of 17" tires.....just a personal preferences. I love the immediate response of 18s.

I think there is nothing wrong with light 18s. Some of them look stunning on our cars and handling response will improve with stiffer low profile tires. I've chosen 18s as well.

Honestly, 18s only look good with certain wheels(on the S2000). I think any Volk, Advan, or multiple spoke wheel looks good in 17" form.

Other wheels like BBSs, CCWs, etc. need to be 18s.

The biggest thing I would worry about switching to 18s, would be ride quality.

18" wheels are normally heavier, you can make up a little of that with lighter tires (smaller side wall). A set of forged alloy 18" wheels and tires can be lighter than a similar stock 17" wheels and tires. But, when compared to an expensive set of forged alloy 17" wheels, 18" wheel still are heavy.

I've had nothing but compliments on my 18's, both on looks and on performance....light as hell too.
