Default Weird tire question

I've been looking through tire rack and noticed that the stock tire diameters are slightly taller on the front than in the rear. I also frequently see 235/45/17 F and 255/40/17 R suggested for aftermarket wheels. This size typically gives about .25-.5 in taller tires on the front. This tall front tire business just seems backwards to me. Wouldn't a 40 series in the front or 45 in the rear be better? It would also give it a slightly more aggressive rake.

Usually when people go 235/255, they go 40 all around.

Stock sizes are 215/45, 245/40, the rears are slightly taller. 215 x .45 = 96.75, 245x.40= 98

remember the sidewall(second number) is actually a percentage of the width(first number in mm) so what seems taller is sometimes actually the same sidewall with 2 different widths. confused me at first too.
