Tires to replace RE-71R? summer tires only SoCal
I loved the Bridgestone RE-71Rs more than any tires I've owned. I've had my car since new (2000). Always previously ran the stock Bridgestones like S02s, RE11Rs, etc.- never loved any of them. The RE71Rs were by far best for my driving style.
I'm running stock AP2 wheels on my 00 AP1. It only sees rain accidentally and for short runs. Wear is not really a concern as I don't drive excessive miles.
Based on what I've found so far the Falken Azenis RT660 - might be close.
Appreciate advice or suggestions!

nothing but postivie things to say about the RT660. They do run wider and are slightly noisier than the re71's and are not as sharp in feel, but the grip is just as good if not better. Ive had 3 sets of re71s in the past so Ive got a pretty good baseline for comparison.

A052's are good, road manners are in line with RE71R's, can't comment on wet weather traction. They have great cool grip before coming up to temperature. They fall off in grip if you get them really hot (autocross or track only) but they're still good and predictable. Biggest issue with them is wear. They wear very quickly. RT660s are significantly cheaper and are known to be closest to RE71R's. I don't think the wet weather reviews have been as good as the RE's but I haven't driven them myself to comment.

No experience with either tires, but from my research, the RT660's are much better for the track. If daily driving, most people probably won't notice much of a difference.

If you want a tire with decent grip and longevity the 615K+ is the way to go if you only participate in the weekend warrior hpde. If you are looking for max grip these will not be it and will be noticeably slower than the 660 and 71r. Its a decent tire that can handle some heat and has quite the lifespan, they just arent ftd tires which is completely fine with me. Its an older carcass with a modified compound over its predecessor the RT615K and will suit the majority of us just fine.

I haven't used the 615K+ personally but agree with the above that the goal of the RT660 is to have a weapon in the arms race that is 200TW autocross classing. It is hardly a street tire and is definitely overkill for the street. Other side of it though is if you drive < 4k miles per year and don't mind replacing them every 2 years, why not...
