Tire Wear Question
I have about 18K miles on my S2000 and the original tires. I'm an old phart and don't do a lot of racing around. However, I noticed that the right rear is becoming a slick, while the left rear is maybe 50% gone. Is this difference in wear normal? BTW, the fronts still look fairly new. Also, can I replace just the backs, and what tire, other than OEM can someone suggest?

My OEM rear S-02's were treadless at 11,000 miles while the fronts looked like new. The agressive rear toe-in was primarily to blame (.28 total at rear) and I would definitely recommend a four wheel alignmnt at the time new tires are installed.
Yokahama has a new tire called the AVS db that is far superior to the OEM Bridgestones in all respects but traction. They are much quieter, really improve ride quality and should last 2-3 times as long if the UTQG rating means anything. In addition, they are M&S rated and from personal experience I can tell you there is no comparison in the rain or snow.
From the seat of the pants, traction seems to be 90-95% of the S-02s. The AVS db cost about $100 per tire front or rear (from Tire Rack or Discount Tire) so you can buy a whole set for the price of two S-02s. They are W speed rated (the same as the S-02s).
The two best things I have done to my S2000 as far a making it more enjoyable as a daily driver are switching to the AVS db tires and setting the rear toe to .03 (each wheel). I'm sure Honda had to spec the rear toe to about 1/4" to dial in some understeer. At .03 it is absolutely nuetral!

Ken - Like others have stated, I get pretty even wear in the rear, with slightly more wear on the right side. The L-R difference at the end of tread life is around 0.2 - 0.3 mm. I agree that an alignment check sounds warranted.
Please double check tread depth to make sure about the uneven wear. I've noticed that when the rear tires get close to the end of their life, the tread appears to disappear very quickly so there may not be as much difference as you may think. I'd be interested to hear the report here when you check the depth.
