w/ Red Celica

The difference is a little more sidewall on the 40 series.

40 series on the front with 35 on the rear will give you a more balanced feel and encourage what I like to call "cornering neutrality." Basically, the front tire will flex a little more and dig in, where the rear will be nice and stiff. Since the rear has a larger contact patch than the front though, you can roll more on the throttle when exiting a corner while keeping the front from sliding.

I don't follow your explanation but I agree that 225/40/18 and 255/35/18 are the way to go. They have the exact same sidewall height which is the goal if you want to keep stock like handling (staggered width/same diameter) with a little extra tire width. I suspect you will rub though, especially in the rear with a 255. You could also do 215/40, 245/35.

You're right, the sidewall height will be the same, but the front tire is going to have more give than the rear at initial turn-in. He's only got a 1 in drop, any lower and I wouldn't have suggested the 255s, but I dont think he should have a problem. OP, what is your camber front and rear currently set to?

I guess I'm really pushing for 225/255 b/c I find it a little frivolous to buy nice 18s with increased wheel width over stock and keep stock width on the tires. jm2c.
