Sumitomo HTR Z III for AP2
I just purchased the rear 245/40/17 (OEM Spec) of the Sumotimo HTR Z III for the AP2s.
Was wondering for those they are running them in this spec:
How they are on daily and AutoX?
I have the RE050 (OEM) I believe but are pretty much bald so its breaking lose on VTEC very easily.
I presume new tires no matter what kind will be better then what I currently have; however. SPECIFICLY, HTR Z III from a non bald comparison.
How to they stand and mainly... the car will be on street more than AutoX (AutoX) is occasionally.
Temps here are usually 40F+ average 50-7xF.
Also, would it be ok and a good idea to get the Z1 Star Spec (Dunlop) for the fronts or get same through-out (Sumitomo HTZ R III)? Reason being is, the start spec seems better but price is the thing right now.
Oh and my current FRONT RE050 are also near bald.

the Star Specs are way more sticky than the HTRs, so you probably don't want to mix and match your tires like that.
The Star Specs are probably the best performance street tire out there right now and if possible (and depending on how many miles you want to get from your tires before replacing them) it is ideal to go with those if performance is your main/only concern.
If you want increased longevity, you might be better off with something like the HTR, though I don't know a whole lot about that tire specifically aside from that it seems to be similar to the stock RE050s in terms of performance and life.
If you have to replace all 4 corners and you're on a budget, then the HTRs are a fine choice, just don't expect them to keep up with things like the RE01R and Star Spec when you're on the autocross course. OTher cheap tires to consider that offer good performance are the Kumho ECSTA MX and Kumho ECSTA XS (Though the XS is new and as yet untested for the most part, I'm sure its a great tire like the MX was back in its time and still is). You can also look at the Hankook RS2 Ventus Z212 for a budget performance tire, though many complain that turn in is sloppy due to the soft sidewalls and wet grip is very poor.
The Star Specs aren't altogether unaffordable, with OEM sizes running less than $600 for a set. This is really not bad for the top performing street tire in 17" sizes. Still, it is a good chunk of cash (as are all things car related it seems) so cheaper options are more than worth considering. I'm in a similar dilemma right now with tires for my AP1, and I'm caught between going all in on Star Specs, or trying to sve some moeny and going with something like the Kumho MX. I'll see a small reduction in performance, but the MXs are a lot cheaper and probably last a bit longer. My buddy has MXs on his e36 M3 and they realy are solid tires, even considering how old they are (they've been around for a while). The newer extreme performance tires offer superior performance, but the MX is still a grippy and exciting to drive street tire for sure.

Yea, well since it be more streen driven I figure I go for the one that is more effective in budget right now. Heck I only got the rears... I will wait a few more months to replace the fronts or all 4 Dunlops then.
These RE050 aren't good now

AP2 V1's w/ 245/40 17 rear --- 215/45 17 front... I have the HTR zIII's on the rear (mounted about 2 weeks ago) and Yoko s.Drives on the front. As soon as the front wears a little more I'll be popping on the new HTR's (215/45 17) So far so good....

there's an 10+ page discussion about the HTRZ-3 that i started about a year ago. i personally went with 215/45-17 and 255/40-17 to keep the specs close to identical.

it will be a year next month since i got my set and 13k miles later, and like i've said before, for the price and performance, for daily and spirited use the HTR-Z3 can't be touched for close 1/2 the price of the oem...
