I had heard that both Michelin and Bridgestone were working on them, but then they discovered that tires made of cotton candy gripped better and were lighter. They have since shifted their focus to sugar-based compounds.

It might be faster not to use tires at all.

Some companies use fiberglass in some belting, but I think the non steel belting of choice is Aramid (sp?).

The tires though are still made of rubber. The fiberglass tires didn't have much traction.

Gasoline prices are going up and up, fiberglass tire is not a bad idea, less traction means less fuel consumption. But bodyshop will love it the most, more accidents with fiberglass too, since less traction means longer braking distance and more rear-ended will happen with fiberglass tire.

I've heard of carbon fiber motorcycle wheels, but my guess is the wheels aren't strong enough for automobiles.
