Stretching tires

the way i understood that is .. stretching reduces input lag, but become less progressive at breakaway loads.
i think this is why you see alot of drift cars stretch the crap out of the front tires, more precise turning ability.

really? this has been around for DECADES now with the vw guys
i drive an audi a3 and i'm running a 215 tire on a 8.5" wheel. yes, just a mild stretch, but a stretch nonetheless. i used to be pretty active in the VW/Audi scene and i can tell you they definitely run some crazy offsets and crazy stretches - sometimes its just to fit the wheel/tire under the car and sometimes its just to put emphasis on the wheel. either way, its a culture just like fatty tires and vinyl wrap is.
what i've heard, and this may just be a urban legend, is that back in the day it was a LAW in germany that the outer edge of your TIRE (not wheel) had to be within the fender of the car. thus, to get around this law, tuners that wanted to run a larger/wider wheel had to stretch their tires to stay within the fender.

It's still a law in Germany that your tire tread can't come out past your fender line. My Corrado had 215's on 9.5 wheels. It's a style/culture thing.

again, this is a style/cultural thing. same as why some people are vegetarian and why some people are on the junk food diet.

So, if the tire manufacture recommends a 7-8 for a 205, and Honda puts a 205 on a 6.5 on the ap1.
as tires get larger in diameter, the recommended wheel width for a given tire width tends to go up. In the case of the 16" front tire found on the AP1, the specs are 5.5" to 7.5" wheel width for the SO-2. And Honda splits that right in the middle with a 6.5" wide wheel.
The stiffer sidewall of the 205/35/18 can handle a wider rim, hence the spec rising to 8".
