[QUOTE=Highrpmek,Feb 12 2008, 05:52 PM] I really don't even know where to start on this.

If you're competing to win, then I would have to assume you would not want to compromise performance to save some cash on tires. This is why serious drifters/racers are sponsored by tire companies. It doesn't cost the team anything to use better performing tires.

So, the "cost" argument only applies to people who drift for recreation. Which, in itself, is a completely unintended use of the cars anyways. No car I can think of was designed for drifting.

The OP was asking about performance gains/sacrifices for stretching tires. All we have established so far is that casual drifters justify poor performing tire set-ups to save a little cash. Seems to me, that is the only reasonable explaination for stretching.

When did one lap of America and Drifting use the same kind of techniques?
Better question, when did the world revolve around you? Did you not read the sentence following the One Lap of America comment. Put it this way, it started with, "I mention this because". It had nothing to do with your over powered drift car that will probably never reach the pro level. Get over yourself and enjoy being in the "other" crowd. Obviously reading and simple comprehension are a problem for you.

When was 600 WHP overpowered for a drift car? If you would do a bit of research you would find that this is on the lower powered side for FI vehicles. As a group my friends do this for fun and compete at local events, there is no reason for them to even try to go pro as funding and skills are not there. I don't understand why you had to throw that little jab in there, but hey I will leave that alone.

love you
600 is considering high power for drift. Most of the cars that make it too the top 16 in formula D are between 400-500....

Anyone remember what S2KI was like 3 years ago. Better yet, pre F&F days. The good ole' days of true sports car enthusiasts. The days when out pacing Boxster S' and awesome top down group drives. Oh well.

Flite, I know the ill effects of running stretched tires. I've voiced some of the facts as well as my opinion in other threads. I don't really consider your set up stretched, but your car would perform and look better with a meater tire.
Having been on this site for over 6 years, I know what you're saying. I was active on it in the beginning, then rook a break between S2000s, and came back to what it is now.

Also, I agree about the car looking better with a wider tire, but in order run anything bigger than a 275 (which currently on there) I'd have to roll fenders. I don't want to do that, so I'm stuck with a 275. As far as performance goes, my HREs are just for looks. I'd be willing to bet that even though they're substantially wider, they perform no better than my OEM tires. I've still got my OEM wheel/tires for "spirited" driving and I've got another set of wheels with stickies coming soon.

Anyway, I guess I'm not going to get an answer in here on the subject. It's a shame.

Oh.... and 600hp is quite a bit more than the average drift car. 2tirefire is kind of an

The way i see it is that very very mild stretching is good. because it'll stiffen up the sidewalls. Those that say today's technology can compensate are very wrong...look at the Direzza Star specs or FK-452s, those things have SOFT SOFT sidewalls. Adding a bit of stretch to it makes it so much stiffer and more predictable.

Sorry but I'm going to have to disagree with you on this one. Sidewall stiffness can be increased in a number of ways; carcass ply angle, turn up height, sidewall reinforcements, etc.. Don't forget tires are built in a world of compromises.
