Stretching tires isn't a bad thing, it can reduce sidewall roll. But when it gets to the point that you have to overly stretch tires to make rims fit, then your putting the wrong rims on a car.

I ran a 225/35 on a 9 front and 245/35 on a 10 rear. That was on my Lexus and is considered a mild stretch. I see nothing wrong if somebody wants aggressive fitment for just a daily cruiser. Not everyone wants to track their s2000. Different strokes for different folks.

I read an article (from a reputable source which I cannot remember right now) that said most passenger vehicles are designed to have tires approximately 20% wider than the rims.
Example:
215mm = front AP2 tire = 8.46 inches.
7 inches (front AP2 rim width)
7 / 8.46 = 0.827 or ~83% of the tire
And going down to a rim 90% the width of the tire can increase handling response with a slight sacrifice of ride quality.
And anything closer than a 90% rim/tire relationship was likely to cause a loss in handling, as the tire is not designed for this. Many people will fit a wider tire on a rim for a bigger foot print, so there are different schools of thought.
I would assume that going to a rim width more than 100% the width of the tire would only deteriorate handling. My only significant argument against this would be that race teams would be stretching tires if there was any advantage.
To me, it appears to be one of those examples of someone prioritizing looking "different" over the driving experience. I couldn't care less on a Civic, but it bugs me when I see it on a sports car.

Kidding!!
It's going on a widebody S14.
It's definitely not something he is doing for handling, moreover doing it to squeeze a 12" wide wheel under an S14 chassis. In most of the cars that my friends have this is considered the norm

If you guys haven't noticed tire prices from a 255 to a 315 is a huuuge amount! Pair that with a 600+ WHP S14 and you will eat through at least 5+ pairs of rear tires in one event. That is another reason, and probably the most valid.
I don't want you guys to get the wrong ideas though, such as I hang out with guys that can't afford rear tires in the correct sizes , so here is a bit of the stuff that happens up here in my neck of the woods. Hope you enjoy.
