Star Spec 245 vs. 255
Hey all, hopefully someone can answer this:
Would a 255/40/17 be much tall than a 245/4/17? I'm thinking about running the 255s in the back and 245s in the front on a nonstag setup.
Or should I just go 255 all the way? I notice the Star Specs are thicker than most tires as well. I'm just worried about some clearance issues in the front.
TIA

I'd try for 255/40 all around, the ability to swap front/rear is really nice. We can't answer the question without knowing the wheel width/offset and ride height. It is likely you will have to do some fender work either way.

You are certainly going to have to do fender work either way, it's just up to you whether you want the look/performance of a slightly staggered fitment or same size all around. I know 255/40 all around has been done with that size. You will probably need to trim the fender liner, cut off the tabs, and do a slight roll. Negative camber will be your friend also. I don't know what you are currently running, but the rear is going to require a roll and bumper tab replacement as well.

My rears are rolled and will modify/relocate tab if necessary. I'm more worried about running 255s in the front. Looks like some say they had to do some pulling and flaring while others say that just a roll of the tabs would suffice.

With the +45 offset, you'll need front work regardless. However, the 255 should require 5mm more space theoretically. I think with the 245, you can get away with just bending up the tab. With the 255, it might need a pull/flare. I'm on 245/40,, RE-11s, +63 offset and it clears everything with -1.5 camber. I'm about to put on 10mm spacers, and I think it'll clear everything wiht -2.5 camber but it'll be very close. As it sits at -1.5, the shoulder of the tire hits the middle of the locating tab for the liner.
IMO, unless you're going for absolute lowest track times possible, you will not notice the difference between 245/255. Even then, I bet the difference would only be fractions of a second. Heck, on a wide open/horsepower track, the 245s might be faster as they effectively have lower gearing, lower weight, and less aero drag.
Even with the 245s, the cornering limit is so freakin high on the street, I shouldn't be driving near that fast anyways.

Hey, great feedback, thanks. However, I think I will go 255s all the way around. The biggest reason being is the benefit of rotating tires from front to rear. As you have said, there's not THAT much difference btw the two, so why no leverage the benefit of rotating tires?

Exactly. You could also do 245/40 all around if you wanted that extra clearance. It would actually be more than 5mm clearance difference because a 245 will also be smaller diameter and a little more stretched on the wheel.

yea i will agree with what they are saying but even with 245s up front i have run into problems with my fenders and they are rolled and the tabs are pushed up, if you want to run 255s you are definetly going to need to flair the front
