Snow Tire Report
I got my self into a bit of jam recently when I committed to driving the S2k from MI to SC first week in December. I realized I couldn't count on making it on my RE050A PP summer tires so I bought a set of wheels and tires from Jim with the intent of selling them after the trip. He suggested a staggered fitment with 205 3D's on the front and 225 M3 on the rears all on 16" wheels. Jim said there is little actual difference between the tires and that Dunlop had said this setup was OK on our car.
I had to drive a slipping and sliding mile to the tire shop to get the Dunlops put on. 30 minutes later I drove back home. No slipping
Three days later was 400 miles of freeway driving, mostly in the snow, temps below freezing. Some places were salted others not but the tires performed great. Handling was solid and braking was good. I don't remember slipping once. I felt very confident driving them. The second day was mostly dry and warmer in the 30's and 40's and the tires cruised fine at 70 on the freeway. The noise was about the same as the other tires and normal handling was fine. Ride was actually a little better. I haven't tested the limits on these tires but feel is still sporty at slow speeds.
My impression is that they would be an excellent choice for a daily driver where snow and cold would be an issue some of the time but where decent handling would be nice the rest of the time. My car is not a daily driver but my brief encounter with the snow convinced me it couldn't be in MI with the summer tires.
These tires are listed for sale in Marketplace forum if you're interested.
Kudos to Jim as always. The tires and wheels arrived mounted and balanced and on time.
