Assuming the existing finish is painted (not bare metal) and in reasonable condition, then all you need to do it sand it enough to take the shine off. Don't go through the paint on the corners! Use a 400 or 600 grit wet sanding paper. Do it wet and you get less dust (like, none...) and the paper lasts longer. Time depends on the complexity of the wheel. The M3 wheel in my picture took a long time as you can imagine. A stock AP1 wheel should take maybe 10 minutes per wheel.

thanx spa-zz so my weekend project should go something like this?
1. remove wheel and clean it
2. wet sand it with 400 or 600 grit wet sanding paper until shine is gone
3. paint, multiple light coats
4. than clear coat, also multiple light coats 5 min apart
im planning on doing this next weekend, i might paint the brakes too since i will have the wheels off....
