TireRack sends their rims and tires with a cardboard disc on each side of the rim. They then hold it all together with those plastic fiber bands all around. Each rim/tire is shipped separately.

Yeah, that makes it really easy. All you have to do is cut pieces of cardboard out to cover the face of the wheel. Then pick up some packing wrap, "industrial saran wrap", wrap the wheel securely and you are good to go.

You need to put a layer of something soft between the wheel face and the carboard or it will get scratched.

Not sure about other shippers, but FedEx considers the Tire Rack packaging method as non-standard and will charge additional fees. If they are in a boxes it's cheaper. (BTDT)

I've always used a layer or two of bubble wrap (the kind with the big ~1" bubbles) and then two layers of cardboard on each side, wrapped extensively with packing tape. I have never tried that packing wrap stuff, but that might save some time. DO NOT skip the bubble wrap... cardboard will scratch the paint!!!

I have never been charged extra by FedEx. In fact, I prefer FedEx because I have found them to be significantly cheaper than UPS, and I've never been questioned about that packaging method. I've shipped something like 5 sets of wheels/tires this way.
