Default Reverse Lip vs. Step Lip

Hi, I'm researching new wheels and ran across these terms. Can anyone explain to me what they mean? (I've already seached s2ki and google w/no diffinitive answer).

Thanks!

Reverse lip is the traditional style lip on 89% of wheels out there. Step lip is as the term implies; it has a step.

Is the lip style just for looks or is there some benefit to either one vice the other?
