Replace S-02 with RE-01R -
225 OEM S-02 replacement tires normally require a 245 tire, but is the RE-01R eqivalent? Has anyone checked the contact patch?

You cannot characterize tire performance based strictly on dimensions. There are factors that are far more important for tire performance.
245 is not a "requirement", 225's are just fine. It is more important to ensure that the appropriate tire for usage is chosen.

I don't think a 245 width RE-01R is made in 16" size.
Tire Rack only lists:
205/45ZR16
205/55VR16
225/50VR16

As this has been discussed thoroughly, yet there are few choices to find a direct replcement for the S-02 OEM
I have tried the Toyo T1-R 245-50-16 and was not happy and returned them.
In my search for a replacement the 225-50-16 replacements were out of spec due to the fact they would have a taller side wall and smaller contact patch compared to the OEM. If this wasn't a factor I would have purchsed the Goodyear F1's
In either case, some manufacturers are different then others in terms of size comparisons general example: Hankook's Z212 225-50-16 had slightly different dimensions then lets say Toyo's T1-R 225-50-16
Is there a significant physical different (not rated #'s) between the S-02 225 and the RE-01R 225? The true test is take tape to each of them.

Again: There is a *lot* more to tire performance characteristics than what can be measured with a tape measure.
The first thing to as yourself is: What do you want/need from your tires?
Max dry grip? RE01R
Driving rain/standing water/wet traction a concern? RE050A Pole Position
Price a concern? Hankook RS2 (these did an awesome job for me on the street and at the track, btw)
Life more important to you than outright grip? Bridgestone RE750
Cold weather/snow usage? Bridgestone RE960AS Pole Position
Dedicated Winter tires? Dunlop WinterSport M3/3D (I just drove 33 miles of backroads through the snow in SE Mass/RI on these, no problemo!)
There are other options in each of the above categories, those are just what I'd pick.

Section width on both is 9.2"
tread on S02 is 8.5"
tread on re-o1r is 8.3"
They are pretty close but the compound of the Re is supposed to be better.

Is that acceptable? ie: ABS/speedometer?
