Rear Tire Woes
#11
Mine wore about 2:1 rears to fronts. 8.5K a set on rears, 16K on fronts.
I do drive it pretty hard.
I'm now on my 2nd set of Kumho 712s and I'll probably buy a 3rd when these are gone.
For the price/performance, they are GREAT!
close to s-02 performance on dry and far better grip on wet.

The reason they wear faster in the rear is the torque is all going to the rear tires and they alignment of the car.
I also would recommend you go back to the OE tires this time and match your fronts. When you get the tires to wear out together you can then look at all the options.
If i can help let me know.
Thank you

How are you guys driving??? I thought I was bad already and managed to get much better life from my S02s
My S02s started to get noticably crappier at 20,000kms, especially in the rears... I replaced all fours at 24,000kms when I got my 17s...
I even think the fronts still have a good 5000kms in them!
Notable events in the life of the S02s:
2 Burnouts lasting about 20 seconds each time
10+ runs down the drag strip
18 1-and-a-half minute laps at the local race track, (spin out included)
4 Donuts
4 Times drifting on pure gravel at 30/kmh (hur hur hur, just like Rally)
and lots of hard driving without slipping

As you seem to know your driving habits & therefore feel this is a bit of excessive wear...have you had your rears aligned? Could have excessive wear coming from improper alignment. If its even wear, I'd strike camber...but you might have lateral issues that need addressing...??? I've heard they can be outta alignment occasionally straight from the factory.
Definitely something to investigate since you're putting new 'uns on soon regardless...

Honda did a lot of mucking around (or careful design modification, if you prefer) to the rear tires. Different compounds, tread pattern, profile and width from the regular S-02s. I think they were looking for a certain (.9g) skidpad number late in the design process. The fronts seem much more normal.
I'm guessing tread compound differences are the answer to your question.

I just replaced my rear tires SO-2's last week. They had 17,651 miles on them. Had to do it with all this rain we had recently. They were horrible to drive in the rain with the lack of tread on them. Ordered the new rears from TireRack. I just gotta say that the new tires on the car now has me driving aggressively I do have to say If I had to do it all over again, I much rather replace them at every 10K just to have that lovely grip of the road.

Man, I wish I could've gotten 18k off the OE S-02's. Mine were just retired @ 15.5k miles in favor of a pair of S-03's.
And for those doubting the mixing of tires, it's not really that noticeable. The S-03's compliment the OE S-02's up front nicely. Taking corners quick, the S-03's bite just as hard as the stock S-02's did when they were new. But, I have only put on a few miles on the S-03's and it may change after they are broken in a bit more.
