Default Rear Tire Woes

We have only 18,000 miles on our 2001 and the rear tires are almost bald!

Yuck!

The fronts still have loads of tread.

I interrogated my wife and she insists that she hasn't been dusting Mustangs on her way to and from work. The occasional 'Vette, of course, but not Mustangs.

I suppose that someone may have smoked the tires in the 4 - 5 miles the car had on it before we bought it, but that seems a stretch.

So here come the questions:

1. Any good reason of which I should be aware why the rears are wearing three times as fast as the fronts?

2. Any good suggestions for rear tires to replace the stock Potenza S-02s?

3. Any suggestions about the best place to get these replacements in North Orange County, CA? Soon, of course.

Merci, beaucoup.

you should be greatful that you got 18k miles out of the rear SO2's. Most people on here only get between 9k-13k miles.
I for one is amazed at 18k miles

Another suggestion (about which I'm very happy) is Yokohama AVS Sports in 245/45-16. Get them from TireRack and use the board link to go there. I just bought this tire (in 225/50) for the fronts too. Highly recommended.

If you're driving style allows it (your milage says it might) you can do with AVS Intermediates, Goodrich Comp TA KDW's, or most any other 3 season high performance tire. Do a search to read all of our arguments about it.

Hey Bill!
Mine lasted about 15.5k miles and I'm a pretty conservative driver too.
My guess is that when taking corners, there is more force on the rear end than the front, therefore putting more friction/wear on the tires, and you don't have to be skidding for it to wear down. Also, when taking off, there's the power to the wheels which causes more friction. Those are my guesses.
I don't know how Richard got 21k mi on his!

I only got like 15k out of my Yoko A520s on my old Lude!

You must be a magician to have them last that long. And mingster, you must drive like a grandma!

My right rear is toast at 6600, my left is a little better. Fronts look new.

Your rears wear faster because they are drive wheels, just the way it is. Also because its rear wheel drive the rears are pushing the car around turns (making a right hander from a stop).
