Default RE71R - What's Next?

Hopefully this is not a duplicate post...
But - since the RE71R's are now discontinued. I'm curious what people are buying instead... I have probably 1 season left on mine and really love them so I'll hold off getting new tires this season...in hopes that a replacement comes out by next season... but if not, the Falken RT660s looks pretty close on paper...

We needed new ones so we bought Falken 660's. No comparative data yet, but they're in the ballpark and didn't burst into flames at the first event. ?

RT660s for sure. I ran RE71Rs for 2+ years on my WRX Time Attack car, and since I parted that out, have started running RT660s on my AP1 and absolutely love them. Excellent levels of grip, and if you get them too hot, one or two cooldown laps gets you right back in the operating window for them.

For Autox A052s are still the hotness. The Nankang CR-1 (now called the CR-S) are looking very RE-71R like. Harder to find as the big outlets do not sell them. But since you are in MN, I can update because a friend with a mobile tire biz is trying to get in to sell them so there may be a local source for them.

The RE-71Rs were actually discontinued a year ago, but there were still batches of old stock here and there so people still had some last year. But we had already switched to the A052 as they were already beating the RE-71R for autox use. We were definitely faster on the A052.

For track days or street use I would not run the A052 unless a competition event. They wear super fast. I ran mine for a standing start event at BIR which was a competition event, but ran my old Falkens for regular track days. I may try out the 660 this season on the track and see how they wear. But it appears price is climbing quickly on them now. Not sure what my "most of the time use" tires will be on track as I like something decent but also something that does not wear as fast as the pointy end tires. Likely will be running Hankooks for that and on the street.

RT660 is easily as fast/slightly faster than the 71R. RT's also run super wide in comparison to RE's.

However, since nobody has asked....what are you using the tires for, and what size?

I have heard mixed feelings on the RT660. I think most liked them, but a few despise them. A few I know that are very fast and competitive drivers really hate them. One says to him they make the yokes feel like they are crisp, and yokes, while fast, are pretty numb in comparison to the RE-71R. I drove his car on the RT660's but it was hard for me to say, as it is an Eco boost swapped NB Miata, so totally different feel from my car and keeping the wheels from spinning even in 3rd gear is tough lol. He mentioned he thought the RT660's also felt pretty bad on his CRX. But again, a lot of folks love them. Feel aside I think they can be as fast as an RE-71R though.

I love my RT660. Its the fastest street tyre I've yet tracked on.

Then again...the chassis/setup I'm using is faster now too. Maybe I'll toss some 71R on for back to back testing

GRM showed the RT660 was a *tiny* bit faster than the RE71R

again though....what is OP doing? Like...these answers about what is most similar would be different for a street driven car. You'd focus on steering feel and instant grip.

Autocross...drag...track...all instances will have different answers to what's most similar.

The RE does badly or well in specific situations.

I'm still on RE71R and will most likely get RT660 next but they are like 4lbs heavier per tire than RE71R and AO52
