Default Question for Jim @ tirerack

Hi,

I started a thread last week about tire recommendations - moving off of S02s.

I don't need as much max grip as the s02s but I absolutely love the crisp cornering feel of them.

A few folks recommended the bridgestone RE760 sports, and I was about to go with them, but I'm wondering if the cornering feel will be too "soft".

Can you give your thoughts on whether the RE760 is a good tire choice for me, or on another recommendation that might cost less than the s02s and maybe have longer life, yet still have great cornering feel?

Thanks,

Steve

My RE760 recommendation was also based on your desire for longer life than the S02's.

If you want stiffer sidewalls more than you want longer life, you'll want a Max or Extreme Performance tire. Tire life will be similar to the S02's. The RE760 is a lower-grip/higher-mileage "Ultra High Performance" tire, and is a good choice *if* you *must* have longer tire life.

Tire selection is all about the optimum compromise for your wants/needs/usage.

Have you checked out the test results and customer reviews at the Tire Rack website?

Hi Zdan,

Yes I looked at the reviews and the table (thanks very much for that - good data).

But I may have described what I'm looking for in a way that misled you - sorry about that.

Let's prioritize this way, compared to the S02's here are the priorities for what I want:
1) similar cornering feel (or slightly less stiff if still very "quick" on turnin)
2) tire-life improvement over s02s by maybe 20% or more?
3) price
4) max traction

I'm very sensitive to the cornering feel, and not as much max traction, I guess I was looking for more s2000-centric thoughts. The tirerack data doesn't really help me evaluate cornering feel.

Does this help or give you other ideas?

And I really do appreciate the help - I'm not trying to be a pain.

Steve

One more question.

Someone suggested Hankook RS-2 over the Dunlop Direzza star specs.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Steve

Who? They need to be slapped.

Maybe for price, cause the Star Spec is a little more. As for performance, I'm almost positive the Star Spec would beat it in every catergory.

^yup I agree. They aren't really even on the same level if you ask me. Maybe the new RS-3 is but not RS-2.

Fish, how are you like those new Kumhos?

I ride on RS-2's. They are great tires on the street and at the track, for the $$$. No way they'll hold a candle to the Star Specs, though.

Some have complained about the RS-2 sidewalls being too compliant/squishy. As far as I'm concerned, they are fine in that regard, for a street tire. But I bet the Star Specs have much stiffer sidewalls and offer more immediate response.

If money is an object (having to buy street tires, track tires, and Winter tires, money was very much an object for me!), the Hankooks are a great choice. Or if you really really really want 245/45-16 rears.

If you're willing to spend a little more, you can get better-performing tires, no question.

Thanks,

This is why I come to the experts. You are the experts on this topic!

I might be able to hit you with some photography tips, but on this one you got me.

And I'm REALLY glad you mentioned the RS-2 sidewalls - a stiff sidewall for cornering feel is key for me. Sounds like the Dunlops win hands down.

Thanks folks...

Steve

Have you looked into the Kumho XS? Excellent tire with a stiff sidewall. I had Star Specs for about 12k miles, but wanted to try something new and went with the XS's. Get on to Tirerack and check them out.
