As for sizes, stock 205/55-16 front with 225/50-16 rear sizing is fine, and this sizing will yield the greatest selection.
245/45-16 rears is a fine alternative, but there aren't as many tires available in this size. 205/55-16 fronts are a little taller than the 245/45-16s, pretty close but noticeable. You might consider 205/50-16 fronts to avoid the "big-fronts/little-rears" look. Or not... 225/50-16's fronts would be another option with 245/45 rears, but then the fronts look absolutely HUGE compared to the rears.

You probably want either Ultra High Performance summer tires or Ultra High Performance all-seasons, depending on the likelihood/avoidability of driving in winter conditions (snow/ice/cold). You do NOT want to be driving an S2000 in the snow on summer tires...
RE050A PP (Max Performance category tire) is going to give excellent wet and dry grip but at the expense of longevity.
RE960 PP (UHP all-season) is going to give some small amount of usability in the snow, at the expense of slightly less wet/dry grip on the street in warmer weather.
The Tire Rack website is your friend, the only thing they lack is they don't carry Toyo or Falken tires.

How common is it to run this size? I don't want my front tires to appear larger than my rears..
Would running this front tire size have any additional benefits/hinderances compared to a 205/55/16? Or is it strictly a looks thing?

Really, so if we are running 245/45/16's in the rear we should consider 205/50/16's for the front tires??
