Jim, are you following this thread? I think The Tire Rack has an excellent tire testing facility and perhaps a test day could be arranged.
It would now be very embarrasing for him to go back on his opinion....
If the theory represented here were to be demonstrated, and I were Jim, I'd be more than embarrased, I'd be downright worried that some people out there with 245s had spin-outs with concequences. As an 'expert' endorsing and encouraging a principal that actually has a negative effect on the rear traction of sensitive cars, he has exposed himself and his company.
Therefore, I don't think he shall be supporting any testing any time soon.
In fact, I think it is much more likely that he shall be cancelling this thread completely, before it gets out of hand....

From my dealings with Jim and from his helpful posting on this board, I am not quite as cynical. It is never easy nor inexpensive to do these tests as it requires several cars and easily exchanged wheel sets. While controlled testing may never occur, we can still learn from accurately reported real-world experiences.

I have 225 S03's on my car, and I have even wear and have already put more than 10K miles on them with quite a bit more tread still left. I drive aggressively, and there is only some wear on the sides from my aggressive cornering. I had the original S02's on my other S2K, and I prefer the S03's, although, I'm not sure if the 245's would be better, or if they would have the uneven wear that many seem to have. I'll be replacing my tires in another 5K miles, so we'll just have to see what I do. I was thinking of getting S03's again, but I may consider the original S02's.

If, in fact, their represenative has erred and that 245 SO-3s actually do provide less traction than 225s, when mounted on the OEM 7.5" rims, it would show 'good faith' to correct this wrong and admit the mistake, instead of leaving even more people at risk as time goes on.
If ANY thread should be cancelled, it's the original one, that puts lives risk!

N.B. to me, excessive center is only important in that it is a demonstration of poor contact patch and it's inevitable concequences on handling.

I have an '02 and live in Portland, OR. We get a little rain here from time to time. :-)
I'm running Toyo T1-Ses on my Miata and have been very happy with the wet traction of them, so went with them for the S. Then I read the sticky and wondered if I had mis-selected my rear, so I had the shop order the 245/45/16 for me to swap them out. The 225 continued to exhibit oversteer, so I thought this made sense.
Prior to doing that I went to the Toyo web site and found that the 245/45/16 is recommended for a 7.5-8.0-9.0 wheel, while the 225/50/16 lists 6.0-7.0-8.0. So the 245 will fit the stock wheel, at the edge of the range, but not outside of it.
Almost everyone here seems to go Bridgestone though. Has anyone used the T1-S and what results have you had with it?

For what it's worth, I recently checked my 245 Ecsta 712 rears again and found no adverse wear in the center. This is my third set of those tires. <shrug>

BUT
The S03 in a 245/45R16 will fit anywhere from 16X7.5 ot 16X9 wheels. They work fine on the rear.

I would recommend the 205/55R16 front and 245/45R16 in the rear. These sizes will keep you close to the OE tire sizes.
