New Bridgestones! RE-71R
#151
I currently have AD08 tires (235/40-17 front; 255/40-17 rear) on wheels that are 8" and 9" wide front to back. Do you think I could run 245/40-17 on 8" wheel (lowered at 13" drop with 3.2 camber upfront) without any issues? I'm thinking yes I can. Advise/thoughts?
Here are the comparative specs:
AD08 - 235/40-17
Tread width 9.1"
Section width 9.6"
Overall diameter 24.3"
RE71R - 245/40-17
Tread width 8.6"
Section width 9.8"
Overall diameter 24.7"

+54 front and +60 rear with track camber at -3.2 and -3.0 front to rear on non-rolled fenders. The section width is only .2mm larger on the 245/40-17 vs current 235/40-17 so I don't see it rubbing or bulging. The AD08 tires run very square where RE's are more rounded.

Just a quick heads up for folks. Most of this has been covered in general on this thread, but here are some specifics, especially for those of us on stock AP1 wheels.
1. At 7.6", the 225/50-16 RE 71-R is almost 1 inch narrower that the same size stock S-02.
2. At 7.0", the 205/55-16 RE 71-R is only 1/10th of an inch narrower than the same size stock S-02.
2. There is no wider 16 inch RE71-R listed on the TR web site.
3. The resulting front to rear difference with RE71-Rs is only 6/10ths of an inch versus the original 1.4 inch difference with S-02s.
In general, I also got some information that serves as a warning to everyone. The Customer Service person at Tire Rack immediately asked me if I am tracking or auto crossing the car when I asked about the RE71-R. He said the tire is really designed for racing and that I would experience a very short street life if I used it for every day driving. I asked if it would last at least as long as the original S0-2s or the RE01-Rs which I am using now and he said he didn't know.
WARNING. Several sources have told me that tire manufacturers are rating their tires with a 200 wear factor in order to "meet" the requirements of sanctioning bodies like the SCCA. This is why some tires have been "rerated" from 180 to 200. It wasn't because the manufacturers reformulated the compound. Obviously, some of these tires will wear much faster than other tires of the same rating. The comments above about rocks sticking to the RE 71-Rs tell me you should be cautious if street use is your main purpose for buying them. I may still give them a try and if they wear out in 5,000 miles, so be it.

Obsessing over width is misguided. Tire width is a relatively minor player in ultimate grip, particularly in ultimate street grip. I would bet on RE71R even in 205/225 widths over wider 215/255 OEM CR tires in any grip contest. I'd get 215/45-17 fronts with 245/40-17 or 255/40-17 rears. Could go 225/45-17 fronts, but a bit pooched on stock front wheels and taller/heavier, I'd worry about losing steering feel/responsiveness.

yeah this is my dilemma as well. i current have this setup
17x7.5 48et 215/45/17 dunlop direzza Z1 star specs
17x9 45et 245/40/17 dunlop direzza z1 star specs
and i also have heard these run narrow like you said. im looking to be about the same size as what i have now, but would that mean going from a 215/245 dunlop to a 225/255 re71? or would you think i would be ok with just going with stock ap2 sizes?

Does anybody run these on a two driver auto x car? We tried a set of 225/50/16 on my AP1 for the last event of 2015 locally and found even in 0-5 degree Celcius weather they were getting too hot and required wheel and tire spraying to try and keep the heat out of them. Thinking I might have to go back to the Z2 SS for our car due to the two drivers?
At least they helped me with PAX
