I bought some take-off wheels from somebody, which I will be putting Dunlop SP 5000 on. 205/55-16 in the front atn 245/45-16 in the back.*

I don't drive in the wet or wintry weather. But in the winter the S-02's take too long or never heat up. I say why wear out the Bridgestones when you aren't getting any grip?

I'm going to continue to run S-02's in the summer... swap at will in the garage.

*The difference between the front and rear OEM tire widths, when stacked up, appears huge! The fronts look like 195's, and the back 235's.

1. Drive year round, except when there is snow or ice on the road. Temperature varies between the teens and the nineties.
2. Most driving is done on the highway at between 70 and 90 mph.
3. Often drive in heavy rain, and water may accumulate on the roads.
4. No auto-cross, drag racing, etc.. Very little driving on winding roads.

Any suggestions? Thanks.
Just one, sell the car.

Actually, I'm only half joking. Your driving habits seem accentuate the negatives of the S and probably don't allow it's greatness to show though.

I wanted an S since they were introduced, I bought one a year ago and have enjoyed it ever since. Recently I did a track event at Road Atlanta, and have to say that I had no idea what a beautiful machine this is from an engineering standpoint until I heard it sing at 7000+ RPMS all the way around the track.

Good luck with the new tires; and reconsider taking your car to the track (_not_ dragstrip) - or at least some twisties...

EDIT: cain't speel

Now you should try driving your S2000 over 80 m.p.h., in heavy rain, at night, in traffic, when the temperature is just above freezing. There is a certain twisted thrill in doing that as well.

destiny2002:

I didn't quite understand your "tire stack" picture. Were all four tires OEM's or were there some Dunlops mixed in?

Thanks,
Richard

Those are all OEM SO-2's. The point is just to illustrate the big difference in width between the fronts and rears. And Destiny, the rears are more like 255's. I took a picture of two 245/45 SO-3's next to a stack of 2 OEM rears...all unmounted. The OEM stack, listed at 225/50 (IIRC), was at least a half inch taller . Unfortunately, the photo didn't turn out (or else I'd post it) but it's pretty clear our rear tires are nowhere near "normal" 225's or even 235's.

Tedow:

Tirerack's site will allow you to get dimensions on any tire you are considering. Not the easiest thing to do (I end up having to print off the page of tire size on each I'm considering), but it will get you the info on tread width, diameter, and a bunch of other things.

Just thought it might help,
Richard

I'm not surprised...

BTW, Dunlop SP5000 are the only ultra-high-performance all-season tire that comes in 245/45-WR16 right now... pretty much narrows the selection down if you want tires a tread compound that doesn't turn glassy in the winter.
