need new tires but question regarding speed rating
is it okay to get other speed rating tires other than Z rated tires on our s2k's?
what are some good (not too expensive) stock size tires to get for our cars?

As discussed on the tirerack, http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tirete...eral/speed.jsp
Actually our S2K's, or at least those of us that have '00's to '03's with OEM S02's, have Bridgestone's with a W rating (safe to 168 mph). Whereas I'm sure many people have purchased lower speed rated (and less expensive) tires without having experienced any problems, given the S2K's handling characteristics, I'd stick with the OEM S02 or at worse the S03.

There are plenty of good alternatives to OEM S02s. Probably the best choice is the Kumho 712, since it is cheap, handles decent, lasts a bit longer than S02s, and rides well. However, when buying tires other than OEM S02s, you need to get 205/55-16s in the front and 245/45-16s in the rear.

Another good choice is the Kumho ASX, since it is a long lasting All Season Performance tire. The only downside to the ASX is that it isn't available as a 245/45-16, so you have to use 225/50-16 in the rear. I did this without any problems, but I have a stiffer front sway bar.

Unless you go with a rear tire that has similar performance capabilities, you will have serious oversteer. For example, you make an emergency lane change, and the front tires (S02s) provide enough grip to do it, but the rear tires don't ... goodbye!
