I didn't really want to post about this, because I don't want to hear the flames about the price, rear tire sizing, and not being DOT approved, but I am considering buying some JDM tires, just to check them out, and I have an importer who will do it for me.

I need help in determining the tread width of the 2 tires that I am considering. The info might be listed on the Japanese website for these tires, but if it is, I can't read Japanese!

I need the tread width of the Yokohama Advan A038 size 225/50/16, and the Yokohama Advan Neova AD05/06 size 225/50/16. I don't think the supplier is talking about the new Neova AD07.

Here are some links with info on these tires:

http://www.advan.com/product/01/advan_neova_ad07.html
http://www.yokohamatire.jp/yrc/japan/
http://www.yrc.co.jp/
http://tireworks.jp/omake/after/after/yo/a.../advanneova.htm

I have seen tread widths on this size tire ranging from 7.1 to 8.3 inches, and our OEMs are 8.5 inches. If anyone can help me find out the tread widths of the above tires, it would be greatly appreciated!

-Pete

By the way the A048 sizing isn't good for the 16 inch wheels, and the cost for a set of 17 inch tires in 225/45 and 255/40 is around $1200!

I looked up the sizing on the Yokohama A032R 225/50/16, and the tread width is listed at 8.3 inches. If the A038 and Neova tires are the same, I think the tires should be okay to use. If I use some wheel spacers to add some track width, it should compensate for the small loss in contact area.

I know the tires will grip better, because of the soft compound, but I still don't want to upset the balance of the car.

If anyone can help with the tread widths for the above tires, please post here!

The spec sheet for the ADVAN tires is on:

http://www.yokohamatire.jp/yrc/japan/sitem...IR_BRND_CD=AD07

Otherwise, I'll look at the websites tonight and see what I can find out. My work computer doesn't understand Japanese at all.

Did you know you can feed text and URLS to Babelfish and get translations? Try babelfish.altavista.com and put in promising text or URLs. It might help out. If not, the translations are sure to be amusing.

Advan Neova A038
Tiresize: 225/50R16 92V
Major Diameter: 632mm
Entire Width: 233mm
Rim Application: 6JJ 61/2JJ 7JJ 71/2JJ 8JJ
Rim Protect Bar attachment: RPB(2)

Advan Neova AD07
Tiresize: 225/50R16 92V
Major Diameter: 632mm
Entire Width: 233mm
Rim Application: 6JJ 61/2JJ 7JJ 71/2JJ 8JJ
Rim Protect Bar attachment: RPB(2)

Advan Neova (looks like A05/06 tread pattern)
Tiresize: 225/50R16 92V
Major Diameter: 634mm
Entire Width: 230mm
Rim Application: 6J 61/2JJ 7JJ 71/2JJ 8JJ
Rim Protect Bar attachment: RPB

So I would hazard a guess that "entire width" = tread width? From the looks of it, it seems as if the A05/06 was replaced by the AD07. The AD07 is a new tire release according to the website.

More info on the AD07:
They claim faster lap times both in dry (1.46sec) and wet (1.84 sec) compared to the A05/06. Additionally, the A05 is the left side tire and the A06 is the right side because they're asymmetrical.

Some "Engrish" translation via babelfish:

Most you insist identity of the ADVAN where the lux which is prominent strongly the TREAD PATTERN - the pattern design which was developed in the one for racing lane in the succession street in original tread pattern tread, is born with the circuit and to forge to eloquence. - The aqua cutting * gull-wing groove feature V letter groove in the point to boat like ahead while scratching the water and dividing utilizing the bearing pressure and torque of the tire, smooth draining you show the resistance hydroplaning characteristic where the actualization racing wet transferring is superior. - You adopt large size block non- on object * directivity pattern tread out side. It raises road-hugging, it shows corner ring characteristic and the traction which is not the times when you are ashamed in name of the ADVAN and are superior. On in side the groove area guaranteeing enlargement high wet efficiency, regarding the road surface which gets wet vis-a-vis that it acquires the high-level trafficability which it stabilizes.

Interesting looking tread all around, and AD05/06's look damn cool.

I found another number, called the "Flat Ratio" that is measured in percent. could this be contact patch?

For the A05/A06 if gives: 50%,55%,45% They are grouped into three sets, the size you want corresponds to the center value, 55%.

On that website the price of the tire is Y12,800. About what? $115.00ea.?

The AD07 has a value of 50% and priced at Y16,000 probably $145-150ea.

It's translation is a bit more readable:
The altitude which is born from the circuit dry & wet grip - dry road surface travelling efficiency and the wet travelling efficiency which are superior in the customer who would like you to seek at high level. - In the customer who would like to taste the power efficiency of the advanced sporty car freely. - In the customer who would like to be leveled up from the grand prix series.

Finally a nice Neova video (this is a must-see, they run every Japanese dream car here):
http://www.yokohamatire.jp/yrc/japan/strea...7nakayama_b.asx

They race the C-West S2000 about 1/2 way through!

But the tires on that are: 235/45R17 93W Front and 255/40R17 94Y Rear

Okay. I finally got the final pricing today.

It's down to the A038s or the AD07s:

I haven't been able to figure out the compound or tread wear rating for either of these tires, which is my big question. I'm guessing the A038s are a TW40, which is the same as the Toyo RA-1s and the Hoosiers, which is as sticky as it gets. In comparison, the A032s are a TW60, and the Kumho VictoRacers are a TW50.

I have no idea about the compound used on the Neova AD07s, except that in the translation above, it states that they are faster than the Neova AD05/06s. For all I know, the compound could be closer to our OEM compound with a TW of 140.

***If anyone can help with getting (or translating) the info on the compound or treadwear for the Yokohama A038 or Neova AD07 tires, please post it.***

I will probably get the A038's to test first, but I'm sure they won't last as long as the AD07s. The A038's are also $190 more than the AD07s, so I'm pretty sure that I will only be getting them this one time. If I try the AD07s first, and they wear out really quick, then I will probably never try the A038s. That's my retarded logic.

I've still got a few more more months of tread left on my S02s, but I am going to order these tires now, since I have made this import contact. I'll probably think about it over this weekend and then order on Monday. The importer said it will take 4-6 weeks for ocean delivery.

YOKOHAMA A038 TIRES HAVE BEEN ORDERED FROM JAPAN!!!

Shipping time = approx. 1 month.

The importer said he made a mistake, and gave me his price from Japan, without any mark up for himself. He said it's his mistake, so I won't have to pay any more for the tires. That's cool! He said shipping would be around $50-$75. I'll bet I end up paying more than $75!

At least I only had to sell my left nut!
