225/40s would be the better fit and reduce the risk of rubbing and be less stretch, but an 8" wheel is within spec there. You should be fine with that setup. Rear is good to go

^^^this. Most people run 225f/255r setups, including myself. 225/245 would provide a little more rotation for your '02, if that's what you're after (and thus my assumption based on the tire sizes you posted in the OP). Do you want the car to rotate more (ie: oversteer)?
Option 1:
225/40/18 f
255/35/18 r
Option 2 (more oversteer)
225/40/18 f
245/35/18 r
Option 3 (safe bet)
215/40/18 f
245/35/18 r
Option 1 provides nearly identical tire heights as well, Option 2 would have the front tire around .3" taller than the rear
btw, 18"s on OEM suspension is gonna make the car look like a 4x4 So if you did decide to lower in the near future Option 3 might be a good place to start and then maybe upgrade to Option 1 or 2 after you run through a set of tires and so if you rub.
215/40/18 is PERFECT for an 8" wheel though
