The larger diameter of the wheel will also push the weight further from the center and slow you down aswell. Not just the weight.
Recently read every 1 lb. rotational weight = 8 lbs. fixed. Certainly can't help that it is unsprung as well.

Don't forget that in order to fit those huge brakes, theres no way they'd ever fit them under a 16" wheel.
I think this is the correct reasoning, not the width, 11" wheel width is crazy anyway. I wonder what a wheel/tire combo for an F430 weighs...

With extreme amounts of HP, you need a wide contact patch. It is not just to allow for bigger brakes. Bigger brakes need bigger contact patch too.

Big brakes are nothing without proper tire contact.

What about the shallower sidewall on larger wheels allowing for more lateral G's?

While unsprung weight is a concern it is not always the only concern. The points people have made are all valid. You have break clearance, wider tires and looks. SOme people are only going to wider and lower profile just for the looks. A few pounds of unsprung weight won't make a difference in that case.
If it is performance then you have to look at all of the criteria and make a judgement call.
