That number is a percentage that determines the sidewall height.
so for a 215/45/17:
215 = width of the tire (in millimeters)
45 = 45% of the tire width (which again is 215mm)
17 = for a 17" wheel obviously
So 215 x .45 = 96.75 (this is metric so millimeters) this is the height of the sidewall.
To calculate overall diameter it would be 96.75(x2) + 431.8mm (this is the 17" wheel size converted to MM) So you get 625.3mm, convert this to inches and it's 24.63" overall diameter for the 215/45/17 tire.
Do the math for the 245/40/17 rears and you get 24.72 inches, so nearly identical.

NEVER new that yea they look almost identical u can see a slight diffrence but not mouch, i was just curious tho thx for the clerification
off topic: im bringin the car to honda tomaro to get the front and rear bumpers repainted i hope they do a good job, any word of advice?
