Back-cracker,

First of all...I assume you are going to put these in the rear.
I would go with 245/45/16...you will get more tread width that way.
General rule is that if you buy tires other than the stock 225/50/16...which has monster tread width (8.5 inches), you will have to compensate with another tire brand by going with 245/45/16.

Now about those two tires...I don't estimate too much difference in performance and longevity between the two. The ES100 will have a wider tread width though. For example:

ES100 225/50/16 has a 8.3 inch tread width.
RE730 225/50/16 has a 7.9 inch tread width.

I would have used specs for 245/45/16...but they are not available on the site.

If it was up to me...I would go with the ES100. It is cheaper, looks better, and the tread is wider.

I am also giving these tires a try next on my 18 inch volks.
225/40/18 and 255/35/18.

What's your opinion with these Es100 and Stock S02 in the fronts?

Back-cracker,

If you don't plan to put the car on a road course with that setup...I woudn't worry at all.

I am running the S02 in fronts and RE730 Gen 1 in the back. For me, the car is holding up pretty well with this setup on street, autox and road course. There is a highly tendancy to oversteer (esp. power oversteer) than the sheer S02 setup though, so becareful, take no risk, can't be as liberal as with the S02. Nevertheless, the RE730 gives more warning than the S02 in the rears.

Since RE730 and ES100 tires are comparable (both non-OEM and have less dry traction than the S02), I would expect the handling characteristics of the s2k with S02/RE730 and S02/ES100 to be similar. Any thoughts?

My next set of rears will be ES100, but I couldn't find it in stock anywhere in California nor tirerack so far. Would like to hear how others think about the ES100.

If you get Yokohamas, get the Advans, either the A032R or the A048 (if you can get them from Japan), the other Yoko tires are pretty inferior in comparison to S02s regarding dry weather grip.

If you're worried about price, then I'd go with the Ecsta 712s, which IMO is a better all round tire than the Es100, also it's better not to combine tires front and back, keep them the same, that way the car will behave like it's supposed to, depending on your alignment.

that depends on the driver. throw in someone not familar with the car and they will problems. Also, tires like the A032 are not for daily driving, they are track tires and it's not a smart idea to run non DOT approved tires on the roads.
